Numbering in Table (Word XP SP2)

I have a table with two columns and I want to number down each column in a couple of places. Word XP insists on numbering across. I can't find a way to control that.

    Can you help me?

You can create two styles, called for example Num1 and Num2.
Make each one based on Normal and Numbered the way you want.
Apply Num1 to one column and Num2 to the other.

    Hi Reva:
Although I like Stuart's way much better, it is possible to number down a column by selecting the cells you want to number, going to Format/Bullets & Numbering..., selecting a numbering template from the numbering tab, & checking the box "Restart Numbering". The trick is to select the cells first & you can't use the Numbering button on the standard toolbar, because that doesn't allow you to restart numbering.
    Cheers,
