    virus checker

I don't want to start a war, but I am getting really tired of the McAfee virus checker. It's lost sight of it's main purpose and is getting bloated with sillyness. A while back I read a few threads about virus checkers. Without the search function I'm out of luck. There was mention of a free or shareware program that some of the loungers seemed happy with. Any recomendations or comments would be most welcome. Thank you.

There were and have been several freebies that get high mention here on The Lounge, not the least of which is AVG. Just be careful of what you go after. AVG will not handle incoming email from some clients. I too got a bit tired of McAfee some time ago and switched to PC-Cillin, which of course isn't free. But, it's non-intrusive, contains no bloat that I'm aware of and the once or twice per week updates are semi-automatic and very QUICK. You get a box on you screen asking if you want to update and if you say yes, it takes only a few seconds to do so. I really like the product much better than I ever did McAfee.

    Hi, Jr ~

AVG Anti-Virus has served me well for years and outperformed the bloat kings. It is quiet, non-intrusive, non-conflicting, and will be as reliable as you are about updating. As Al stated it may not scan mail from all e-mail clients, but it does for OE, OL, Eudora, Juno, and a few others. You get:<UL><LI> AVG Resident Protection
    <LI> AVG Email Scanner
    <LI> AVG On-Demand Scanner
    <LI> Basic Scheduled Tests
    <LI> Free Virus Database Updates
    <LI> Automatic Update feature
    <LI> Easy-To-Use Interface
<LI> Automatic Healing of infected files
<LI> AVG Virus Vault for safe handling of infected files[/list]

Thanks to you both. I am downloading AVG now. I'll give it a try. I'll keep the pc-cillin in mind. Thanks again.

I have used <IMG SRC=http://www.free-av.com/images/antivir_schirm.gif border=no > as my safety net since I also gave up on Mc$Fee a few years ago, for much the same reasons. Like german cars, AntiVir

I use Avast! from http://www.alwil.com. They have a free and 'pro' version. I use the free version. Seems quite good. I've not seen any definite resolution from AVG about their continued support for the free version. So, just be aware that it could go the way that InoculateIt from CA did. True free versions are becoming harder to find.

    Re: virus checker

McAfee took one last kick at the cat by refusing to uninstall. A trip to thier forums netted me a list of registry entries to search for and delete and a file list so I can do a manual uninstall. I've used thier program since around DOS 5 but each version seems a little worse. To bad. Well, on to regedit.

If you want some independent comparisons, try
    http://www.securityrealm.com/antivirus.html
    http://www.claymania.com/anti-virus.html

Magazine reviews tend to be unreliable, being heavily influenced by who advertises in them I've found <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.
