    Gold vs Feathers

BEWARE this is a TRICK Question:

Which weighs more: a pound of gold or a pound of feathers?

    Re: Gold vs Feathers

Yes their respective weights depends on the gravity where they are weighed. But assume they are compared using a pan balance: The gold on on side and the feathers on the other. Are they balanced or is one side heavier.

    Hans,
I will give you a hint about your comment:
    <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>You are INCORRECT, they do NOT have the same MASS</font color=yellow></span hi>

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>I thought that the pound (avoirdupois) is a unit of mass (Googling yields that the official definition is 1 pound (avoirdupois) = 0.45359237 kilograms). The corresponding unit of weight is pound-force (lbf).</font color=yellow></span hi>

You are on the right track:
    <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>Pound of feathers (avdp) = 0.4536 Kg

The trick is how many KILOGRAMS is a POUND of gold? </font color=yellow></span hi>

    Re: Gold vs Feathers

    Here is the Trick:

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>Gold is weighed using a DIFFERENT POUND (called Troy or apothecary pound). The troy pound is used to measure precious metals.

A pound of gold is only 0.3732 Kg vs an advp lb of 0.4536 Kg

Another odd thing thing: there are ONLY 12 (troy) ounces in a (troy) pound (each = 31.1 g), but 16 (avdp) ounces in a (avdp) pound (each 28.3 g).

So even though a pound of gold has LESS MASS than a pound of feathers, an OUNCE of gold has MORE MASS than an ounce of feathers!</font color=yellow></span hi>

    Don't you love a "non-metric" system!

I said it was a TRICK question.

    <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>Most ASSUME the trick is that they weigh the same, something they learned pre-teen in school!</font color=yellow></span hi>
