    RD field code (2002 SP-1)

    It seems that Word will not allow me to insert an RD (Referenced Document) field code. I'm trying to build a ToC from multiple docs without using Master/Sub Docs.

    Make sure that you have hidden text displayed. As soon as you type

    {RD }

    Word hides the field.

    That much is known. I've tried entering the field code via the Insert menu--it displays, but as text and not a field code. I've tried Ctrl+F9 then typed in R (all seems fine to this point) and as soon as I type the D, the field quality is lost.

    When you type the "D" in the rd field, Word instantly formats the font as hidden. Ctrl+Shift+8 (on the main keyboard) toggles between seeing all hidden characters & seeing none, just like the Show/Hide button. Alt+F9 toggles between seeing field codes & their results.
    Cheers,

    Does this happen in every document or just in one? Just wondering whether that document has some special "issue" or whether it's Word-wide. (I can insert these fields in a new document in XP without difficulty, so I'm hard pressed to guess where the problem lies.)

    Re: RD field code (2002 SP-1)

    If I understand correctly, the difficulty isn't getting the field content to display -- for which any of the usual methods of making hidden text visible will answer -- but that the field is actually transforming into plain non-field text.

    If that's the case, then what it sounds like is that there's an AutoCorrect or AutoText entry defined somewhere that's making the transformation.
