    IDE to USB converter box

I have a 7200rpm HD from an old box I would like to use in one of those IDE to USB converter kits to use as an external backup drive for a notebook. Am I to understand correctly that USB runs only 5 volt as far as power is concerned? I would like to NOT be tethered by an additional power source. Are there any such IDE to USB kits manufactured that can convert a 12 volt HD so as to depend on the USB as the sole power source?

Not that I am aware of. You see, any good External Box is going to have a small fan in it, so it's going to need it's on power source. Or let me put it this way, I won't by an External Box that doesn't have a cooling fan in it.

Bruce, I don't think so - the hard drive just consumes too much power for USB to supply it. There may be something out there to help, but I'd be leery of anything that tries to step up 5V to 12V for something sensitive like a hard drive.

    Bruce,

While a step up from 5 to 12 volts is possible of course, the real problem would be the current (amperage) drawn. I'm afraid that the increased current flow would be more than the USB port itself could handle and you would "tune your MB for smoke". <img src=/S/meltdown.gif border=0 alt=meltdown width=15 height=15>
