    Re: Totally Bizarre Behaviour

I have no idea what is causing this, but then, I don't understand my own life.

My general process when Word up and bites me is to byte back.

At the first sign of trouble in a document, I unload/reload Word, start a new document, and Insert,File from the old one and save with a new name.

At the first sign of trouble in a template, I save with a new name, run the VBAAppCodeCleaner (Thanks, Payne Consulting!), then save with yet another new name.

When nothing is going wrong, I forestall it by regularly saving with a new name, which is why my templates have an ever-increaisng 3-digit tag, as in Indxr040.dot.

Shades of Alvin(?) in the Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy (well, quatrology or quintology doesn't really ring true).

Paranoid perhaps- but then, perhaps worth while. I've had enough troubles with Word, Excel etc to warrant it being worth while.

There was a post some time back (somewhere) about automatically saving files (under different names) using different names. That appealed to me much more than having to remember to save under a different name periodically. I think it was a DOS command, something like "AtTime".

I've programmed myself to go look for it at 4AM in 3 days time.

    Re: Totally Bizarre Behaviour

I've got code that generates a unique name (guaranteed) for a document from my old "convert WP51 8.3 names to Word 8.DOC names" days.

You could hook that into an Autosave sort of macro?

Now THERE'S an interesting thought: How do we intercept Word's "automatic save every ten minutes" code? Think of that. One could write polling functions that, say, check for email each hour, or pop up a GUI "It's time you took a walk, strectch your legs" or whatever.

    Totally Bizarre Behaviour

I think I'll cross-post to Word, but maybe someone can help me here too, since VBA is involved.

I'm adding forms controls to a Word 97 document (and coding behind them) and all of the sudden, when opening the properties for a combobox, I get the properties sheet for a command button. Opening the properties sheet for a text box reveals the properties for the combobox. Iz all mess up. Help!

Anybody know what's going on and how to fix it?

    Kevin,

Apologies for going off the tangent on this thread.

I can't help you on your problem- I'm sorry.

I did think Chris's thoughts on regular saving under a different name- and the reminder of an earlier thread about regular backups- where worthwhile in their own right- but not answering your question.

    Re: Totally Bizarre Behaviour

Well, I have an update on this problem. But first, let me ask you why do you think MS does not open up the entire "object model" to developers. Why should we not be able to manipulate the auto save functionality as well as many other things I've mentioned before (like the MRU lists)?

Anyway, here's what I've discovered: My template (so I thought it was a template) originated from a document sent to me as the basis for a new form. I saved this document as a template and that apparently create some sort of half-breed document/template. I could create new documents (File>New) from this "template", but each new document was based on our company Normal (File>Properties>Summary). Not seem that before. Shouldn't the new docs be based on the new template? I started over, created a blank template, saved it with the new name, copy and pasted the form fields, text and code, resaved and things are looking much better. The field jumble has cleared up. Weird one.
