    Missing Pics (6.0 and 6.1)

Lately, I've noticed that only some of the graphics on web pages display. If I right click and "Show Picture" on each non-displaying pic, they'll appear. The Show Pictures check box is checked under the Advanced Tab. I've got all the Windows Update updates, etc. Any ideas?

Re: Missing Pics (6.0 and 6.1)

    Hi Kevin:
This is a recurring problem with IE where the "red x" appears instead of picture. As far as I know, no single solution works consistently. The ones that seem to work are:
    1. Clicking Show Picture. (but this is a pain & doesn't solve the problem)
    2. Changing the View/Encoding (I'm not on IE right now so I'm not sure where the Encoding submenu is) & changing to either English (Unicode), English (European). Agtain, this is a one time shot & not too satisfactory.
    3. Going through Add/Remove Programs/scrolling for IE/clicking add_remove/& choosing the Repair option. This is what I normally do. Should you do this, it changes other options. It adds a shortcut to the Desktop & to Quick Launch. Must also go to Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Automatically detect settings & check it. Do NOT check the ~ option under Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings.

There have been several threads in the past, but I think they're temporarily gone.

    Phil,
Thanks for posting, but nothing worked. When we can search again, I'll try to find the posted you referred to.

    Dear Mr. Bosch,

Eye shore do 'presheeight yur post. Unfortunately, nothing mentioned in either KB article worked. Bummer. The only thing I did not try was reinstalling Windows. Not likey to happen either. We don't have personal firewalls, but do access the web via MISA -- the MS "firewall". I think I got this *virus* after installing the IE6.1 update.

    Kevin--

I don't remember if there was any definitive solution after a couple pretty long threads on this a few months ago. I think the closest had to do with the encoding submenu that Phil is referencing and Phil, Leif, Jefferson, Al may remember some of this. I figured the odds were good you didn't have NPF or NIS which can conflict with a number of things but usually be configured to fix the conflict. I have never seen the XP firewall acused of this, but know that it can be configured in advanced menus.

    Phil--

The encoding submenu on the IE toolbar is at View>Encoding.

Re: Missing Pics (6.0 and 6.1)

One NNTP threader said the solution is to wait for an IE sp or update. Since nothing has worked (that I'm willing to try), I guess I live with it till MS gets off the stick.

Re: Missing Pics (6.0 and 6.1)

Part of the problem with this has been attributed to Norton Personal Firewall either stand alone or with Norton Internet Security--I believe Symantec has several KB articles on this but I couldn't find any--will continue to look.

Re: Missing Pics (6.0 and 6.1)

If there is an SP2 for IE or XP or both in the works, this is definitely something that should be addressed because it is a widely publicized problem in IE 6 and some other flavors. I have the red "X" syndrome sometimes, but I've learned to live with it. Phil has 98; Add/Remove isn't an option in XP and other many other repairs including regedits for IE repair and SFC don't seem to impact it. Maybe there is a solution in the encoding, but you don't have to look hard to find a lot of threads on it in groups.

Here is one list that was created awhile ago:

    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6720

I think it is incomplete (we found a few more possible cures), but MSeng got tired of making up that list!

    R2--

I'll check out the thread, but can you offer cause(s) or a solution to this "pictures not showing red X problem," and/or "pictures not showing problem"?

Re: Missing Pics (6.0 and 6.1)

I am not sure there is a difference. Can you define that more completely?

Internet Explorer shows you an image -- IF it can find it -- or it shows you a Red X. One or the other. I have never seen IE show neither the image nor the Red X where an image is supposed to be.

I think there may be a multitude of reasons. Clearly, I have seen many "sure fire" solutions that only work for a few people. And then other "sure fire" solutions that work equally well for a few others. It was simply not possible to find an all encompassing solution for all -- so we gave up.

Personally, I like to increase the number of connections with the web server. Since most people seem to be too afraid to touch the registry, we added the option in to the SpeedGuide "TCP Optimizer" -- available for download here.

Or, it is a simple registy edit!

    >> I have never seen IE show neither the image nor the Red X where an image is supposed to be.

Below is a typical 'non-display' I frequently experience - I suspect the lack of the Red-X may be due to the size of the missing image.
Note that the hover tip still displays, and that some appear to have a little hyphen in the middle - perhaps the beginnings of the Red-X holder?
I can find no consistency - in three consecutive visits to this thread I had one icon button missing, two missing (as attached) then on this visit, Kevin's user-pic refused to show.

Right. Got it. I think those are just the beginning of the Red X.

What happens there is that those images are stuck in a table with defined cell heights and widths. Therefore, the full Red X image cannot be displayed -- there is not enough room in the table's cell.

Re: Missing Pics (6.0 and 6.1)

I get the same non-displays as Leif sometimes, and sometimes the little manilla folders that are either tan or sometimes reddened normally (never have been able to figure the significance of those even after reading the FAQ several times) but I also get the same effect on other pages. In the lounge, this is often but not always cured by hitting "refresh" on the IE toolbar--not sure what happens there. I know it reloads the page, but I'm not sure specifically why it reloads it so that it displays everything after the refresh.

I'm getting from you that the non-display problem in IE is an ongoing problem with no universal fix.
