Outlook shuts down when scrolling through Contacts (Outlook 2000 SR1)

Got a strange one, here. Outlook freezes then shuts down on one of my user's when she a.) scrolls through Contacts or b.) composes an email using Contacts. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? And how to resolve it? Much thanks - Sat

I'd start by trying to isolate the problem with quick hits. If you're in corporate/workgroup mode (server based) make a profile for her on another PC and see what happens. If it still acts up, there is a problem with her account on the server. Also, make a different profile for her on the same PC. If fixed, the profile was corrupt. If still broken, maybe you should try detect and repair frm the help menu.

A remote possibility is a corrupt Contact record. Run Scanpst.exe (aka the "Inbox Repair Tool") on the pst file with the users' Contacts. If that doesn't help, make a backup (archive) of her contacts, then try exporting Contacts to Access or Excel, deleting all Contact records (you did make that backup, right?), running Scanpst and then reimporting Contacts from Access or Excel.

Okay - for the record in case anyone else ever has this problem. It WAS a corrupt Contact. Of course we didn't get the previous post soon enough for the user, so we ended up contacting Microsoft and spending TOO much on a tech call....but it fixed the problem. The resolution was much less technical. We added the Modified column to user's Contacts view and sorted by recently modified. Of the 5 modified in the past few days, only one was an individual Contact (the rest were dist. lists). And this Contact just HAPPENED to be the one we had used when testing the "outlook shuts down when you address an email using contacts" problem. We deleted that Contact and the problem stopped - no more Outlook shutdowns when scrolling through Contacts or sending an email to this particular contact. Re-added the Contact and all is well now.

Technical musings: Funny that one bad Contact would shut down the entire program. I suppose technically that it's not a problem with the Outlook program itself (since it was ONE contact gone bad)....but the fact that Outlook completely shuts down because of a corrupt contact could constitute an inherent program error and, IMHO, should be listed on the MS Knowledgebase. But nothing like this was anywhere to be seen there. Oh well... <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15>

That's a good tip about sorting by most recently modified. FYI, a corrupt e-mail message can also cause strange problems, the most common of which being tbat it can't be deleted.
