Networking XP Home and XP Pro

    Hi,

I'm sure this question has been answered many times, so maybe someone can simply refer me to a URL?

I'm buying 2 new laptops to network with my existing desktop, which runs XP Home. The network will share both files among these 3 computers and one cable-modem Internet connection.

I'd like to use XP Pro for the laptop I take to college, and XP Home for the laptop that stays at home for my mom.

So, I must ask, Are there any known problems in networks that use both XP Home and XP Pro? If you've configured a similar network--that is, XP Home and XP Pro--perhaps you would just confirm that it can be done and is easy?

    Thanks a lot!

    Jon

The only problems I've had networking XP is when you bring other OS versions into the mix. XP seems to like itself fairly well, which is a good thing. Even better, XP will maintain alternate network configurations so that you can log on at college and home both without ever having to change your settings.

    Hi Mark,

You read my mind, as I'm a college student. How do I configure these alternate networks for college and home?

And, just to confirm, when you say the only problems you've had networking XP is "when you bring other OS versions into the mix," you don't mean XP Home with XP Pro or vice-versa, but XP Home or XP Pro with 2000, Me, 98, etc, right?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jonathan,

If the computer is set up for DHCP, it's a simple thing to accomplish this. Microsoft provides better instructions than I probably could do in KB article 283676.

You're correct about my statement regarding other operating systems....XP has quirks with other Windows versions that are non-XP, but not consistently; just enough to really annoy the snot out of you. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Good luck!

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for the link. I'm going to guess that both Comcast, my ISP at home, and Hamilton College use or don't use DHCP, since both networks serve many people. So, if when I get to college I can't connect to the Internet, then I'll setup an alternate configuration. Thanks for your help.

Glad to help. The odds are in your favor that DHCP is being used both at college and by your home ISP...I don't know many, if any, sys admins that want to deal with manual configuration of IP addresses!
