    Preview Pane Interpretation

Any military folks out there being told to supress preview pane in any and all versions of Outlook under the poorly defined need to ensure virus' are not activated by auto preview. Numerous ongoing discussions still have not satisfactorily explained this theory for me. When is a message considered "activated" in regard to executing a embedded or attached virus?

    Re: Preview Pane Interpretation

The concern is that when an HTML message is displayed, OL will interpret any scripts embedded in the message. It would be best to disable scripts from running rather than require everyone not to use Preview. See <A target="_blank" HREF=http://members.nbci.com/jeffrospud/outlook/OL_secur.html>here</A> for instructions.

outlook 2000 will not run active content in preview

no version will in the 3 line autopreview.

Outlook97 can not run active content period.

Outlook98 can, but you can disable it using security settings.

The email security patch released in June and included in SR2 and 2002 will not allow active content to run.
