Win 98 change owner

Hi folks, a colleague purchased a 2nd hand notebook loaded with Windows 98, and asks how does she change the name in the computer system to hers? I think she has to go into the registry and alter it under identities, perhaps someone can help with info on the process step by step? She has legally purchased the machine, has all the paperwork etc. Any help greatly appreciated, thank you.

The relevant MS article is:

Do you need help to change the registry setting?

Hello Leif Thank you for the swift reply, I have gone into the registry and followed the same path as shown in the article, changed the "registered owner and registered organisation" to the lady that purchased the notebook, saved, rebooted etc. But under Accessories/system tools/system information, the owner is still showing the company she purchased it from. Also the name of the previous owner is still showing in the start menu under "Log Off Joe Bloggs", any thoughts on what I have missed? . Must be more I need to alter in the registry? Greatly appreciate the help.

Hi Cyberdance

Two or three months ago, I think, there was a thread that involved what you are trying to accomplish, including changing the graphics in the System Properties window.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the forum, let alone the thread, but as I recall, Bruce Krymow and Cowboydawg were active in the thread. Considering the Search function isn't working for the present, they probably wouldn't mind if you PM'd them with your problem. If they can't help directly, perhaps they remember how to find the thread.
Please post the solution if you find it outside of this thread.

Have a Great day!!!
Ken

Re: Win 98 change owner

Hello Cyber,

The information in the System Properties is stored in a file called OEMINFO.TXT. I believe it's a hidden file, but you can find it using the Windows search tool and change it to whatever pleases you (or your colleague).

For the name appearing in the logoff option you should be able to log off and then be presented with the Windows logon screen. Enter a different username, leave the password blank, and log back in. The name should then change. This will work only if it is the Windows logon and not Microsoft Networking. If it's the latter, you need to change the primary logon in the network properties in Control Panel.

FWIW, the registry changes that you're referring to will only be relevant when installing software.

Howdy Ken, I too recall reading the thread on this topic, I think it was on the 98 forum board, but as you say, we are unable to locate or search for such posts at present. I will give Mark's suggestion a try before bothering anyone else, but thank you for the interest. cheers.

Re: Win 98 change owner

Hi Mark, thank you for the reply. I was able to alter the name via the registry to show the new owner in System Properties (found in the control panel>system), but I cannot seem to alter the original entry under "System Information" which shows under Programs>accessories>system tools>system information, this screen only seems to allow COPY and SELECT ALL under its EDIT menu. No luck finding the OEMINFO.TXT file using a windows search, anything else Im missing (apart from brain cells)?

Re: Win 98 change owner

Dah, I think I misunderstood. I was corn-fused as to exactly where the additional instance of the unwanted name was appearing.

OEMINFO will only exist if the OEM has put it there. What this file does is to populate the System Properties dialog box with manufacturer and support information. On a non-OEM installation (or one where the OEM didn't care to do this) there won't be such a file. Thus not finding it is not indicative of a problem. In fact, I'm going to back track and tell you to forget about it for the time being. If any brains cells are missing they're mine, not yours.

Under System Information, the user name is culled from whomever is logged in at the moment. Have you tried to log off from the start menu to see if you're presented with a logon box? If it logs off and immediately jumps back into Windows then autologon is enabled, and that needs to be turned off. If the dialog box appears with the previous user's name in it, then you should be able to take the steps I mentioned in my previous post to correct the name that appears (entering the new username and leaving the password blank).

Keep us posted!

Dear com-fused, welcome to my flummoxed world of bewildered technical confusion - fear not at misunderstanding my post, I have trouble understanding myself, little own expecting anyone else to. I will certainly try to log off and on in the thingamegig by the wotchawkalit, and let you know.

Hi Mark, your solution was way too simple, and it worked!! How nuts is that? I spent ages trying to fix that seemingly minor edit, you would be laughing if you had any idea how many things I had tried before I asked here in the forum. It is great to be constantly learning, something like this is never wasted as I discover so many other things along the road. Many thanks for your brilliant mind and for sharing it with us.
