Posting problem

Something funny going on here!
I noticed a problem when replying to another post, so took a screen dump to record the problem.
When I came to post it, there's no field for the attachment name.
So I quit that and started a new posting - this one - and the same thing. No field on the screen where I could add an attachment. It's difficult to show you without being able to attach anything, but I can mail the picture if that helps.

Very odd!
Can you change your skin then change it back again to see if that fixes it?
Otherwise or anywat, feel free to mail me your attachment.

Re: Posting problem

OK - got your attachment.
I notice from your profile that the Lounge fails to detect what browser you are using - can you confirm?

Something has got munged, but exactly what, I'm not sure. Can you:
Go to edit your profile (the <IMG SRC=http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/member.gif> button]) and simply select Submit .
Log out, delete your local WOPR cookie, then log back in again.

Have you changed anything of late?

Re: Posting problem

Hi Leif
1. IE 5.00.3315.1000
2. Have done as you requested. On this reply to you a) on this, the first entry, there are no error messages but still no option to add an attachment.
following the preview of the post up to and including point a) above, I now have the error message about "although file attachments are allowed, you must be using a Mozilla 4+ compatible browser for this feature" PLUS your post top which I am replying is in the In response to : window and the text of your post is fine up to the end, i.e. the words "of late?" and then there is a string of
<font face and so on for four lines of gobbledegook.
3. No changes to the machine set up on my part - although I guess Norton has performed its 'Live update' to get the latest virus files and I don't know what else it might have brought down.

Re: Posting problem

I'm going to move this thread to the IE forum - it needs a serious look at!

I've also attached a portion of the screen shot you sent me, which clearly demonstrates the 'No attachment field' problem plus the gobbledegook!

Re: Posting problem

I've seen that before when the Lounge server had severe problems. It went away after a few hours (or should I say, I went away for a few hours and it was better when I got back).

Re: Posting problem

I'm still suffering this problem. No attachment field and garbage in the 'In response to' field after a message preview
I recently posted a query on the lounge about my Norton Internet Security detecting inbound attempts to access svchost on my PC. I am blocking these.
Is it possible that the Woody's lounge server needs to perform this access to read details of my browser and so, blocking it is preventing it from being identified
Also, I recently renewed my Norton subscription and, following the acceptance of my money(!) lots of stuff was downloaded, including updates to the Norton engine. Could this be (part of) the problem?

Re: Posting problem

Well, it looks like your browser info is available OK.
As Jefferson said above, this problem was observed some time ago briefly but I can't for the life of me remember what the cause (or fix) was.

Could you right_click on the page > View Source and email me the resulting .txt file?

Other than that, you may wish to upgrade to IE5.5 or IE6.

(You don't have another browser installed - Mozilla, Netscape, etc. - which you could try? That may identify it as an IE specific problem or not...)

Re: Posting problem

I'm assuming you mean the source of the Javascript page (I'm dense that way).
If so, it's on its way by email (because I can't add attachments to lounge postings!!!)
Thanks for your continued help and interest

Re: Posting problem

Woops - no! I should have been clearer....

Can you get to the point on a Lounge page where you see the lack of attachment box and all the gobbledegook as per the attachment above, then do a view source. (Presumably, you click on Reply, but don't actually reply!)
I'd like to see what the code is that generates the gobbledegook.

Re: Posting problem

This is a test posting.
When I arrive here, there is no field to add an attachment, but a) no error message and your posting is 'in English'
When I preview the first part of my posting a) the error message about needing Mozilla etc appears and sometimes the gobblegook appears in the the In Response to box. If there is no gobbledegook, repeated previewing will eventually provoke it. When gobbledegook appears, it is sometimes the whole of your posting but sometimes your posting is in clear but followed by some gobbledegook.
This latter is what has happened to this posting. Text file is on its way. I've created another file which contains the contents of the In response to field.
Thanks

Re: Posting problem

Hi Leif
I think I may have a pointer to the problem. As I said before, I run Norton Internet Security, and I was playing around with this to see if there was a setting which might affect browsers - or rather stop browsers identifying themselves. I came across a built-in security test and, when I ran it, the first page displayed contained the following message.
<hr>Your browser did not send any information about your system. This is usually caused by running software that blocks user-agent<hr>
Symantec was unable to determine either my operating system or - and this is the relevant bit, I think - anything about my browser.
However, I do not understand the message! Q1 What is a user agent. Q2 What software is the likely candidate for doing the blocking and Q3 What are the implications of unblocking user agent.
I hope this might be the clue that unlocks this mystery!
