    IE 5.5 Anywhere? (Any)

Is there ANY live valid link for an IE 5.5 download? I can't find any at all...

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Chuck--

This looks live and valid: I set up the download. I didn't install it on top of IE6 SP1.
    Download IE5.5
Microsoft isn't downloading it because IE 5.5SP2 is in extended support.

Just curious. Why IE 5.5 instead of IE 6.0? Is there something else in your system you feel is incompatible? Don't forget to download IE5.5 SP2 at the link above which probably includes everything in IE5.5 SP1--you can check at the link above on that.

    SMBP:

I want(ed) 5.5 for a couple of reasons: using an old machine (P233), and 55 seems faster, but also, I'm having a good deal of trouble with trying to get Win2K up and going, and since I had already had some problems with IE6, I figgered I go retro...

SMBP---(Some more better programs?/some more better partitions?)

IE can be a bear to fix some times of any flavor, but in theory a new IE 6SP1 should be the most stable--they are due for an SP2 for both Windows XP and IE6 respectively at the rate they are producing hot fixes in their Trustworthy Hotfixing Program (see Windows Flaw Remains, and I believe Windows 2000 is up to SP4 and IE5.5 is up to SP2.

Did you get IE 5.5 downloaded OK from the link?

    Summore...:

The link is *great*... full versions...

    As for Win2K and SP4: )(*)(*)(**&*&^*&^#(*#&&#@%@!&%@*&)(*$)(*)(*@&#(&^# w*&^q()*@#+)(*$#

I have had to re-install Win2K *4* times this week... I get everything all set up, then, via WinUpdate, I install SP4, and on the next (or *maybe* second-next) re-boot, I get an error message that ntoskrnl.exe is messed up... and copying a new copy over just diverts the error message...

Isn't there any way, like in Win98, that you can run an install from inside Win that just in effect verifies files?

Also, I'gotten messages that some pro had a problem, and info is being written to an error log. Where IS that log?

I'm real tired of the process here... I started to go back to Win98, but decided I'd try once more.... stupid me...

    Anyway, thanks for the assist....

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Re: IE 5.5 Anywhere? (Any)

I don't know another way to install SP4, but there are many many people on the lounge who have considerable experience with Windows 2K and its SP's who can possibly address this.

Ntoskrnl.exe is extremely important, and is the kernel that is loaded in the boot sequence after the hardware has been successfully detected when the HAL (hardware abstraction layer is loaded). Essentially the boot sequences of Win 2K and Win XP are identical. I'm not sure what the exact error message is because you didn't give it to me, but these may hit it:

103673: Err message Windows Could Not Start Missing... Ntolskrnl.exe
124550 : Err Message Windows Could Not Start Missing... Ntolskrnl.exe

You could hit the KB to look it up. The log should be reached Start>run "eventvwr.msc" and check the categories for error messages that correspond to the time.

You should stick with Windows 2000. I haven't really studdied up on problems with their SP's since I have XP, but you can search for some answers on some 2000 sites or the KB. Maybe someone else is knowledgable about Win 2K. You might post your error message and problem with it on the Win 2K part of the lounge and get help from some people who are plugged into it.

    Good luck,

    SMBP

    Chuck--

An active thread on Win 2000 SP4 is going on here in the lounge Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and there might be some help getting it in there.
