    AdAware Update

I received an email overnight about an update to my AdAware Pro 6. I don't know if the same stuff pertains to the other versions of AdAware or if it's just the Pro. The email included a link for the free download, a username (which must be TYPED in, it says) and a password for downloading (which they suggest copying/pasting in).

This update doesn't require re-installation - only un-zipping a few files and copying to the destination directory. It presents itself in the About screen as Build 6.181 so I went looking around on their site for info about it and couldn't locate anything specific. Here's what the email said: <blockquote><hr>New in 0181:

    Re: AdAware Update

My "free" version of 6.0 says "internal build 610", which doesn't look like "0181". Even the latest Reference File - 0R147 12.06.2003 - doesn't show any similarity...

    Re: AdAware Update

I just uninstalled Adware6.0 Build 159 , went to the Webb Site and Downloaded Adware 6.0 Build 181 and Installed and it shows the new build and everything works great. The site did say to uninstall any Previous Versions before Installing New Build if you want to do a full install which by the way seems to be just as easy as unZipping and copying new stuff to Adware Folder and restarting Adware.

    Re: AdAware Update

Appreciate the "heads up". Have questions. I downloaded the Ad-Aware update (0.181 available for the free version as well). Also offered are Adaware 6 Plugins and the latest reference file 7/12/2003 (yesterday on my time). Adaware update install goes in fine; they advise to uninstall previous version; goes fine in seconds. Always appreciate software that installs and uninstalls easily, because that's not always the case. Plug-in goes in fine--I may have had it already--don't see a date.

Problem is with the latest (yesterday) reference file. When unzipped, you're asked "whadayawanna open this file with." Instructions on the download site are:

[i]<small>"Manual Installation: Unzip the archive, replace the existing file and restart Ad-awareAd-watch.You can also use the webupdate component implemnted in Ad-aware to install this update." There now is reason to use the reference file. From the support forum--Thanks Lonnie! comes:

Important Note About Future Updates to the Reference File

Now that Ad-aware includes SmartScan, there have been some changes to the way the reference file is built. The newly designed reference file works hand in hand with the latest version of Ad-aware to bring you the new innovations described above.

Ad-aware 6.0 builds 162 and prior are not able to understand these these new reference files to their full potential. While the reference file has been written to be 'backwards compatible' with build 162 during the introduction of these new enhancements, future updates will now be fully designed to work with build 181, and will not be 'backwards compatible' with builds 162 and prior. Therefore, upcoming reference files updates will only be available for the new version of Ad-aware. Previous versions will not see updates to their reference files.By the way, these extra additions have been incorporated into the reference file for some time. They

    Re: AdAware Update

    Hi SMBP

    Forget the ref file download.
Open Adaware, select Check for updates now, click on Connect.
Adaware will check to see if a ref file more recent than your current file is available. If so, follow the prompts to download and automatically install it.

The ref file contains the data that enables Adaware to identify the unwanted files on your computer. It's a good idea to check for updates regularly....at least once a week.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: AdAware Update

Thanks much Ken. I just found that in the help index--the reference file is the data base that allows it to function. But I didn't realize that you need to check it once a week for updates, and now I will. Must be analagous to antivirus definitions in the sense that AV is only as good as the updates. Should I just delete the reference file I opened into notebook (with jibberish)--or is it just taking a small amount of space and that doesn't matter?

Thanks, Bruce - the website appears to me never to say what is the current version!

    Re: AdAware Update

    John--

Unfortunately the website doesn't on the first Adaware Page, but when you click the links for either AdAware Itself it does, and the first web page you hit after the Lavasoft Home Page has a date of 12.07.03 in red. The initial Web Page could be formatted a lot more clearly. A simple "Get Latest Updates...Version ...Dates would suffice and make it less confusing.

    Re: AdAware Update

Yes, but that date in red relates to the Reference File, which is (fairly) unrelated to the version of the Ad-Aware software!

    Re: AdAware Update

That's the reference file, John. For the App itself, it could have been more explicit and intuitive I agree completely.--and that's with a lot of web pages and menus. I'd love to be turned loose on the ones from Microsoft in Windows XP and IE6--would be my first choice and I'd fix them considerably for the better. I'd go to work on the registry with a vegance also but I'd get some help. I'd chain the developers responsible for those keys and values to some desks until we fixed it so it was explicit and exact so anyone willing to spend a little time could use it like a well done index.

    Updates for Ad-Aware 6:

Click 1 LavaSoft HomePage: "New Updates for Ad-Aware 6 (All Versions) are Available" 2nd News Item Down after Intro
Click 2 Page Title Download Our Great Software: Under Reference File "Adaware 6 from..." And this is where it gets confusing. Click this and...
Click 3 You have the version named: Adaware 6.181

How would anyone have done it?

    News:

We are pleased to announce our new Adaware Update 6.181 available such and such a date
Reference File Update such and such a date which turnes out to be 7/12/03
Java Plug-Ins such and such a date
Languagepack such and such a date
Reghance Version such and such a date

All of this could have been at the top of the home page. Much easier, much more explicit. Instead you need 3 clicks to get to one of the mirrors to find out if it's a newer version than what you have. I don't know why, but I'm glad it does what it does and it's free. I can show you endless examples of this kind of extra clicking/ Raiders of the Lost Ark Hide and Seek in Windows XP and IE 6.

But as Ken pointed out to me, and I wasn't doing, so I appreciate this thread, all you have to do is
Click the globe on Ad-Aware once you have it to update the reference file which is the key to its working. And it's a good idea to check it say weekly, because Adaware is only as good as its reference file updates

    Re: AdAware Update

    Hi SMBP

The ref file that you downloaded can be deleted. When you "Update" from within the Adaware program, the file is automatically incorporated. The ref file that you downloaded is, therefore, of no use.

    Re: AdAware Update

Yeah it's really just as easy or easier to do like I did and uninstall your old Version and Install the New full Version. Then you get everything you need and ready to go.
