    1. Download th diagnostics from the web site of each component manufacturer, e.g., hard drive and modem and ...
2 Memory testers are available from http://www.simmtester.com/ and http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/.
    3. Also, try http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php, http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and http://www.sisoftware.net/. In particular, SiSoft Sandra has a burn in test that might be useful.

Personally, I'd never purchase a computer without manufacturer's warranty.

I'm going to assume that this laptop either doesn't have an OS, or you're not able to use it due to a corrupt OS.

Just to check the "general" usability of the laptop, I'd suggest using something along the lies of Knoppix Linux. It comes pre-configured so that you just USE it.

I've used it to test the hardware compatibility with Linux, as I'm slowly moving my home computers that way. No need to worry about it messing up the hard-dirve of the laptop either, as the CD you create will not install anything to the hard-drive unless you specifically tell it too.
