That is pretty cool. Keeps things in Alphabitical Order and grouped. Never really messed with it before now. Will try it for awhile and see how it works out.

I love it for retrieving stuff--it's made it a quantum leap better--one of the few neat orderly things I have.

'Show in Groups XP'--Great Feature to Use (XP Pro SP1)

This may be very old news to most, but if you haven't looked it over the "Show in Groups" feature of XP and manipulating details can work some wonders for organizing files and folders that it would take a 3rd party app usualy to do. A lot of people from machines I see are familiar with the "Details" view, but pass over the "Show in Groups" feature. It has to be one of the niftiest features of Windows XP, and really can save you time in finding files and folders.

If you have a number of notepad items, it will even organize entries within each notepad--and you can apply it to all of your folders with about 3 quick clicks if you want, and turn a list of links or phone numbers into a mini outlook/oe address book. Of course if it's alphabetical, you have only to hit the key of the letter you want, and you will immediately be taken to say the "G" folders or files.

What This Does That Helps Find and Organize Files and Folders:

In any view except Filmstrip and List, this feature superimposes headings and that's the organizational and convenience beauty of it. It makes the window look like an index. You can sort by name, size, type, modified. Name is alphabetical by letter and great for retrieval of files--saves a lot of time. Size gives you headings Tiny, Medium, Small, Folders. Dates gives Yesterday, Last Week, Earlier This Month. It makes hunting down icons in crowded folders much easier. Free Space is an option in the My Computer Windows, and shows you how much free space is left on each disc. With your images, it confers some of the convenience of say Adobe Photoshop Album which costs between $40-50.

Details offers classification of your items according to a number of categories. Size and date installed and date modified sorted in columns can be particularly helpful. You can click the same column heading again to reverse the order. For example, click Date Modified once places your oldest files first; clicking again places newest files first. A small arrow up or down indicates sort order. This last feature doesn't work if you are using the really neat feature "Sort in Groups."

Finally, the columns can be manipulated several ways to provide even more info about each icon. Right click any column, for example Date Picture Taken photo files, Album Title music files, ect.

You can turn on or off checkboxes, and even determine their sequence moving them up or down or just dragging them. You can tweak the width of a column by double clicking the divider, dragging or manually by editing the number at the bottom in pixels.

To apply to all files and folders: Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View>Apply to all Folders.

I use Windows Classic view so I'm assuming this does not apply to me. But I've actually forgotten how to get over to the other view. I thought it was "View as Web page" but that seems to be gone from my menus...or that was Windows 2000...

As for your Clasic View. See Black Pointer in window below.

Hey that's kinda cool! "Merci" for freeing me from clicking to organize by type every time I want to look for a file in My Documents! (which is too big, but who's isn't).... Ahh freedom, and on Bastille Day, too!!!

You can apply Group View to all folders (I do it by name) and then switch particular folders to a type of your choosing (time, modified date, size, or type, and they'll stick until you switch them to another category or apply to all again). This is probably not news to anyone; but I have all of mine by name, and sometimes find it convenient to switch my downloads folder to when modified). It speeds up a number of things I do or it sure seems to. I do less aimless thrwashing around looking for the right folder--and it has cut down on having to search for a file or folder.

I also forgot to mention something else that some people may like (related) is that you can assign any picture from your photo album or any of your saved images to a folder as well as the usual icons or favicons by going to View>Customize This Folder.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 15-Jul-03 11:20. )
Gotcha (since I was already in Explorer, I just skipped that first part). Works with classic view, and looks like it will be handy for large folders where the eyes glaze over.

Added later - Not sure about that screen shot. I don't have the left pane with the big buttons. Maybe it's related to reverting the Start menu to "old fashioned"? Anyway, I'm not looking to make radical changes to Windows, there's hardly enough screen real estate for the information, let alone all the decorations.

    Thanks Cyberdance--

Make sure you try out the four different formats Name, Type, Size, When Modified on the View submenu, because different people find that they like to apply each of these to certain folders, and sometimes they like to switch between them while they're working with that folder--no problem--you only need go to Explorer when you want to make them all uniform. I find these formats really convenient and feel like I have more control over my far flung files this way.

Everyone has seen some different file organizers and viewers and finders and many are good--but I have trouble finding my organizers, magazine/paper/journal articles, and other software I have downloaded to try some times and this has been a big help--it has no learning curve and its quick and easy to do or undo.

I will SMBP, thanks again. I am one that alters the view to whatever will find the file I want fastest, so am familiar with changing my details around by sorting options. This program looks neat! I appreciate you posting the info, I have found many of your posts and sites very interesting.
