Bullets in front of continuus linenumbers (MSWord 2000)

Help!
I have a document which has the continuus linenumbers on, and suddenly, there is a bullet in front of all linenumbers!
Also, the line above the footnotes at the bottom of the page has a bullet in front of it.

How do I remove the bullets?

Kind regards,
MVW

Were the line nubmers applied with File | PageSetup | Layout | Line Numbers?

Or are they the result of a numbered list (or style with linked numbered list)? (Format | Bullets and Numbering | Numbered)

(Edited by jscher2000 on 15-Jul-03 10:54. Added a picture.)
Just to confirm: are these the kinds of bullets that appear in the body of the document, or the square bullets Word puts in the margin to flag that the paragraph has some special formatting (e.g., Keep with Next)? If it's the latter, check the paragraph formatting, second tab, and see if you can find the cause there.

Yes, they were applied with the command File -> Page Setup -> Layout -> Line numbers -> Add Line numbering -> Continuus.

Kind regards,

The bullets are circular, the same kind as used inside the document in some places.

My first guess was that the automatically generated style "Line Number" was responsible, but it didn't have any indication of bullets in the description of the style (in Format -> Style... -> Description).

Kind regards,

MVW

Can you paste some of the problem paragraphs into a new document and post it here for analysis? You can replace the text with gibberish to protect confidentiality.

MVW,

Both of these styles would be based on the Normal style - check the style definition for the Normal style - has it accidentally had a bulleted property applied to it?

Sorry, it took a while, because the problem document was replaced by a previous version. We have to get our work done....

But now I have the same thing again with another doc (vbased on the same templates & WOW).
These docs are confidential, so I can not send a sample.
Though here's a bitmap that clearly shows the problem: bullets in front of the linenrs, and in front of the footnoteline.

Re: Bullets in front of continuus linenumbers (MSWord 2000)

Check the definition of the Line Number style; normally, it is based on "Default Paragraph Font", but that might have been changed.
Next, check the definition of that style (if it says Default Paragraph Font, take Normal). Is that style bulleted? That would explain why line numbers and footnote separators are bulleted; the bullets would have been turned of by direct formatting for the text in the document.

If this is not the case, could you follow Jefferson's suggestion in <post#=274756>post 274756</post#>:

Can you paste some of the problem paragraphs into a new document and post it here for analysis? You can replace the text with gibberish to protect confidentiality.

That way, Loungers can experiment with the problem.

Re: Bullets in front of continuus linenumbers (MSWord 2000)

Hi Hans,
Thanks for the answer, but I can currently not check, because I can not reproduce the problem again!
I even saved the document that had the problem under a different name, with the intention to check things out later, but that document doesn't show the problem any more.
Currently, none of my docs have the problem anymore. It comes and goes, but I do not know what causes it!

If I see it again, I'll check according your advise.

But I do not understand why a style is changed without me doing anything else then editing and copying text around.
Usually, I have about 4 docs open for editing, but all are based on the same template. All these docs have a years-long history of editing...

I wouldn't bother about the problem, if I could print (->PDF) it without these bullets, but it does show up on the printout!

Kind regards,

If "Automatically Update" has been checked in the Modify Style dialog, manual formatting would update the style definition.

Re: Bullets in front of continuus linenumbers (MSWord 2000)

I am normally very careful NOT to switch on the "Automatically update" of styles, so I doubt this would have been the cause.
Besides, I wasn't applying bullets when the problem appeared, nor removing them when it disappeared.

What style is used for these linenumbers (and the footnote line)?
If I knew that, I could try to change the style again....
I did check for a style that had the bullets on, (at the time of the problem), but didn't find any.

Kind regards,
MVW

Line numbers use the (surprise surprise) "Line Number" style.
Footnotes use the "Footnote" style, and the footnote separator uses Normal, as far as I know.
