Word Opening Many Instances (Word 2000)

Every time I open a word document, it opens another instance of word. Does anyone know how to reset word to open all documents in the same session?

Are you sure that you are really starting separate instances of Word? Word 2000 behaves differently than Word 97 in this respect - Microsoft has made it look as if each document opens in a separate instance of Word (witness the separate icons in the Task Bar), but in reality it runs just once.

If you run the Task Manager (under Windows NT/2000/XP, I forget what it's called in Windows 9X), you'll see several instances of Word in the Applications tab, but the Processes tab shows what's really going on underneath the hood.

Tools | Options | View | "Windows in Taskbar" -->uncheck the box. Does that help?

Hi Kevin, I think that is new in Word 2002/Office XP.

There was an add-in created by Romke Soldaat, the name of which escapes me, which somehow managed to make Word 2000 behave more like Word 97, emulating its multiple document interface (MDI). Seems like a couple years now since anyone posted feedback on it.... (searching e-mail archives...) Okay, here you go:

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/SDIMDI.htm on the Word MVP site. There is a link to another site from which you can download a workaround by Romke Soldaat.

    Regards,
    Hans<hr>
    Hope this helps.

That's right. I forgot that 2000 is "hard coded."
