Recomended Security Updates (Win XP Pro SP1)

Hi all, newbie here...
I re-installed WinXP Pro on a fresh Hard disk and was wondering which security updates do I need that will not cause problems (I also run Norton Internet Security and suffered through the 'update blues'). Anyway, suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Bobsen

I would recommend installing all security updates. You shouldn't have problems as the updates are designed to prevent problems, not cause them.

That is a bit naive. In theory, you're right, of course, but Microsoft has released several security updates that caused more problems than they solved. Earlier this year (in March or April), they released a security update #811493 that made hundreds of thousands of PC's slow down to a crawl. There is a new version of this update without the problems, by the way.

As far as I know, there are no serious problems with any of the XP updates at the moment, but it is always wise to check whether early adopters have experienced any problems

I've never had any problems with the updates myself.

Best I can tell you to do is install the updates, and if you have problems, use system restore, but as I said, I have never had any problems yet with WIndows XP Pro updates. Good Luck!

You have been extremly Lucky. The Internet has Tons of articles from people who have had problems with more then one of these updates. And Woody will tell you the same thing. As a matter of fact read some of his News Letters, which by the way are always right on the Money. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying don't use them, but as with anything else, check into it first for runability problems. Just because it says Microsoft doesn't mean it's free of Bugs.

Bobsen--

A few places to skim through to get some perspective on some of the Hotfixes/Patches that have caused problems (beside the lounge which is quick to pick up on them) and if you go through the past Windows XP/IE Section Threads you can quickly skim and get up on the recent problem hotfixes looking at the thread titles:

Security Focus
Woody's Window's XP Newsletter Archives
Langa List Newsletter
CNET News Read Daily and Search For Hotfix/Patch Articles

(Edited by DaveA on 15-Jul-03 20:26. )
I think at this time, the bad updates have been corrected. So if you were to install SP1 and the the current "Critical Updates" you would be in good shape.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I think it's more likely that it's full of bugs BECAUSE it says Microsoft. I was only advising to update them because with my personal experience on three computers of mine, I had no problems with the updates.

Yeah, that reminds me of a friend of mine who had this fellow employee that practically stalked her. He told her he was going to hack her home computer to get her address and phone number. I took a few minutes to look up her name with whitepages.com and came back and told her her address and phone number. She freaked out and screaming "See! If you can do that, he can too!" I told her I just looked in the phone book.

Re: Recomended Security Updates (Win XP Pro SP1)

Yeah I personally haven't had to much problems with them, a few , but nothing that couldn't be fixed in a hurry. I only use the ones that I have to have and I do mean have to have. Other then that I don't use them, but thats just me. I have no problems with my Machine or it's Security, so I'm OK. Well as OK as anybody else that is. If a Hacker wants in, he's gonna get in, I don't care what Patch you have installed, a good Hacker can beat it. The machine I use on the Internet has nothing that he would want anyway , unless he wants to steal my identity. And that would do him more harm then good, but he's welcome to it.

Yeah if she was my friend he wouldn't be stalking her long. The stalker would become the Stalked.

LOL. That's what I told her. Of course after he was let go by the company, she never heard from him again.
