Cursor Reverts to System Default (WIN XP (SP-1))

I have a 1600x1200 screen and the small default cursor (black edged pointer) is hard to find on busy screens so I've used a ArtCursor's cursor editor to create a nice large animated pointer ("Fancy Pointer") that changes colour - makes it much easier to find on a cluttered screen. I've set the new point as the "Normal Select" pointer under Control Panel|Mouse Properties|Pointers and saved it to a new scheme. On Applying or Oking the custom pointer scheme setting, the Fancy Pointer appears on my desktop and in application windows as it should.

However it doesn't stay that way <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15> - for some reason, and I haven't been able to establish any pattern to this, my Fancy Pointer reverts to the Windows default tiny arrow pointer. Sometimes it does it when MS Word has the focus, sometimes with Outlook and also Excel and various other applications so I don't think it is application dependent.

I've also created some other fancy cursor for "Busy" and the "Text Select" and these stay as they should, it appears only the "Normal Select" point has the problem.

I've searched through the Registry and all locations I've found that define the cursor characteristics point to by Fancy Pointer. It's got me beat at the moment.

Anyone got any bright ideas on the cause and fix for this problem? Has anyone else suffered from the problem?

Save your mouse pointers scheme (Start | Control Panel | Mouse | Pointers tab, choose all pointers you want and click "Save As" button choosing the appropriate name of the scheme). If Windows restarts from the crash and restores previous scheme, choose your scheme once again.

Re: Cursor Reverts to System Default (WIN XP (SP-1))

As noted in my original post, the new cursors are saved as a new scheme, "My Scheme" for want of a better name.

The cursor changes without the system crashing or doing anything else abnormal. Simply, my Fancy Arrow Cursor reverts to Windows default arrow cursor. (Incidentally, I've renamed all the default cursors in the C:WINNTCursors folder to prevent them from being used, and even with this the cursor still reverts to the system default.)

My "Fancy Arrow Cursor" always comes up on reboot (cold or warm) and a while later it, and only it, always reverts to the Windows default. All my other fancy cursors remain fully operative. Reselecting "My Scheme" via Start|Control Panel|Mouse|Pointers tab and applying it resets the cursor to my Fancy Arrow Cursor, but a little while later is again reverts to the Windows default.
