    Re: Searching ZIPs (XP SP!)

    Tim--

The PersistentHandler key helps make Search work so I wouldn't eliminate it, or change its value if you already have it. You may need to add it if you don't. You could be looking for a new Search tool, imperfect as XP's Search is.

    See for reference:

    The Toolbox: Search Problems XP
Tek Tips: Adding a PersistentHandler key to Help XP Search
Using the "a word phrase in the file"Search Criterion May Not Work

There are ways to adjust Search to make it optimal, as you know but optimal for Search in XP, at Tech Net, at MSDN, and on Microsoft's site in general is not very good. As Doug suggests a lot of people are substituting

I'm not sure where you were given the idea to delete that key, but it may have been a good source--everything I have seen says you need it and if you don't have it create it. But you can have it both ways--delete the key and export the key and see how it works. If it's better you're improved. If not, you can get your key back. I'd also have a good current back up of what you want to save.

    Re: Searching ZIPs (XP SP!)

Tim, I found that interesting so I went on a learning expedition. This site explains the purpose of the PersistentHandler and has a nifty little GUI utility to make modifying the search values. Doug Knox also has a "Bad Search" vbscript that works in a different way. Reading these search results, it sounds like your observation is correct.

I noted on the first site that it explains a problem I've had: XP would not look inside of my PHP files, there was never an error, and I couldn't figure out why. Using the first utility I mentioned, that isn't an issue any longer. Thus I say <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30> <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> for pointing this out. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

Well, as I said, I got the idea from the converse of the problem I mentioned, and to which you gave the links to in your previous post. Certainly the PersistentHandler key 'helps search work' but the idea was to get it NOT to work - in ZIPs

    Re: Searching ZIPs (XP SP!)

Thanks very much - my own research didn't turn up either of those. But if the first guy is correct, then this is all the PersistentHandler key does on the ZIP (or any other registered non-text file) so it seems safe to switch it off. Obviously, having exported the key first! I've had it this way for a day or two now and nothing seems to be falling apart - except that Search doen't look in ZIPs, which was the goal.

Glad you fixed it and glad you both helped me understand it better.

Well, no, because that stops the Zip functionality completely.

Fixing Windows XP's 'Search' Function (Pro/Home)

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL to article.. See the Quick Guide.[/i] <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
Click here to view the entire thread in flat mode.

There's a fix for the XP Search facility not searching certain files - see MSKB article 309173 (Using the "A Word or Phrase in the File" Search Criterion May Not Work).

So it struck me that you could turn off the searching of ZIPs by removing the PersistentHandler key under HKCR.zip. You could toggle this with a script or a pair of REG files
After some brief experiments it appears to work, without affecting ZIP functionality in other ways. This seems a more elegant solution than the only other one I've found, which is to deregister and reregister the zipfldr.dll and cabview.dll.

Edited to add: This works for all file types, not just ZIP files. Make sure you read the rest of the thread!

What does the panel think? Is this going to screw something else up? Does the PersistentHandler have any other function?

Re: Fixing Windows XP's 'Search' Function (Pro/Home)

I realize this is a very old thread, but I'm new to XP & have a question. Does deleting the PersistentHandler merely turn off searching zip files for text or is it supposed to eliminate the zip files from showing up during a search?

I was trying to prevent zip files from being searched. I've tried deleting the zip/PersistentHandler key & going to
    My ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetC ontrolContentIndex
& changing the value of FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions to 0 & then reboot. Windows Find still searches & returns files within zip folders. I'd like to be able to do searches without including zip files. Is this possible?
    Thanks,
