    Trace returned email

Is there anything available, software or service, that can help trace the origins of a returned email message?

I received a Mailer Delivery Subsystem notice regarding an undeliverable message that I never sent, from an account that is never directly used (it is the drop address used with a disposable address service, and so is never directly given out). The undeliverable message that was attached had been sent to an email address in Russia and was entirely in Cyrillic. I've ran two different anti-virus scans (AVG and Avast), an anti-trojan scan (Anti-Trojan 5.5), Spybot and Ad-Aware but nothing turned up except for a couple of open ports (25 and 5000 were noted as used by some trojans, but no suspicious activity was evident). I'm hoping that something in the message could give me a clue to its origins and if there are undetected problems that need cured.

There is some info on reading email headers here at pobox.

From what you say, the chances are someone who knows your 'secret' email address (if possible?) has been hit by a virus that has used your address as the From: header. The virus was sent on - in your name - bounced, and you get the undeliverable message back.
I think all you may eventually find is who sent the undeliverable notification, not who originated the mail in the first place.

That's a little piece of mind there. I felt that I had done a rather thorough check on the computer but, with the proliferation of stories about the new p0rn problems and blended threats penetrating firewalls and AV programs, I wasn't too keen on blindly accepting nothing found == no problem to find.

    Hi David

You could try some of the tracing features of SpamCSI. It's "Donation Ware" so it won't cost anything to try it.
Just Cut & Paste the info into the appropriate SpamCSI search box and see what it can find out for you.

    Have a Great day!!!
