Excel chart problem - Excel 97

My user encounters the following message whenever he clicks on or tries to create a chart.
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in
    module MSO97.DLL at 017f:3070ac08.

I have found nothing in the TechNet database. We have done a full removal/clean reinstall of Excel ... but the error persists. I've even placed a clean copy of the MSO97.dll on his machine ... to no avail. Woody says you guys can help...and I sure can use the help!

Does this only occur in a particular spreadsheet or is he unable to create/modify charts in any workbook at all?

Often these problems are caused, not by excel, but the graphics card/driver combination. It might pay to either reinstall your drivers or get updated versions from the manufacturer's website.

Re: Excel chart problem - Excel 97

I have a user with the same exact problem, same exact page fault errors. I was trying to use the procedures in TechNet Article Q160552 to fix the AutoCorrect ACL files. The utility didn't work but renaming the USERNAME.ACL file to .OLD worked the first time the user used EXCEL again. The next time the user used Excel they were unable to creat a chart without the error. We've uninstalled Office 97 several times including a registry clean. The user also had Access 2000 and FrontPage 2000 installed but that was wiped prior to the last install. What bugs me is I can fix the problem for the first use of Excel but when the USERNAME.ACL file is recreated the problem returns. Virus definitions are up to date.
