    Preventing Excel from making email addresses links (2000)

    I am sure I've read this before, perhaps more than once, but I cannot for the life of me find out how to prevent Excel from converting every email address I enter in a speadsheet into a hyperlink. Same goes for web addresses. I know I've made that change before, in Excel 97, so I expect that feature to be here as well. Please help!

    This is one of the autocorrect options.
    Select Tools>Autocorrect Options...
    The required option is on the "Autoformat as you type tab"

    This was taken from Excel XP but Excel 2000 will be very similar if not identical

    It isn't there in XL 2000. I use

    Sub unhyperlink()
    Selection.Hyperlinks.Delete
    End Sub

    which doesn't delete the text, just the hyperlink.

    Isn't it available in Tools | AutoCorrect... in Excel 2000?
    If not, set the option in Word; AutoCorrect settings are Office-wide.

    No, and yes, but in my case I prefer to have the default create as hyperlinks, and turn off the hyperlinks if I need.

    OK, that's fine. I thought it might be useful to the original poster to know how to turn it off entirely. Now he can choose which option he prefers.

    After typing and entering, press control-z once to remove the hyperlink.
