Windows in Taskbar (Outlook 2002 SP2)

    Hi

I was wondering if there is anyway to deactive the equivalent to "Windows in Taskbar" in Outlook. In Microsoft Word, you are able to to turn off the "Windows in Taskbar" feature, this prevents the display of a taskbar button for every word document that you have opened. I would like to be able to do the same in Microsoft Outlook. I don't want to display a taskbar button for every e-mail document that I have open.

    Thanks,

    Gilles

I can't answer that, but since I switched to Windows XP Pro, I find that Windows consolidates all the application buttons once you have more than about four windows open. So... if you have an OS update in your future...

And with TweakUI for XP, you can force all "windows in Taskbar" to be grouped to a single button for all apps. That way, when you click the taskbar button, it shows a "drop-up" list of all the windows for you to pick from, and gives the option to close the lot in one hit, etc.

I actually don't mind that (by default) it takes five or so buttons before Windows starts to group. One less click to switch windows. Maybe they should make the list pop-up when I mouse over it? Hmmm...

My preference is to force the grouping, as above. That gives you the full window title in the dorp-up list, rather then the usually truncated title in the taskbar button, making it easier to switch to the right window. The mouseover is a good idea - would save a precious click.

I guess this is another of those "horses for courses" or "each to his own" religious issues wars get fought over .

Re: Windows in Taskbar (Outlook 2002 SP2)

Thanks Guys for trying to help me out with my problem. Here is the situation. I have several users who have migrated from Office 97 and Windows 98SE to Office XP and Windows XP. As far as the taskbar goes, many of those users would like to have Outlook 2002 working that way it was with Outlook 97. Meaning one taskbar button for Outlook, no grouping involved. You are able to do this with Word, Excel and PowerPoint by de-selecting the "Windows in Taskbar" option. I can't seem to find an equivalent feature in Outlook 2002.

    Thanks,

    Gilles

(Edited by TimOz on 19-Jul-03 14:54. ps For (new) TweakUI info)
If you use TweakUI, with the settings as in <post#=275470>post 275470</post#>, above, then your OL2002 users will have just the single taskbar button for OL. The catch is that the same, single button behaviour is forced on all other apps too. That is just one button for IE, or whatever, even with a dozen windows open, etc.

I use OL2K, so don't know what settings may be directly available in OL2002. But I'm unsurprised that it's behaviour differs from the other Office apps.

ps Good timing - looks like TweakUI has just been tweaked, see thread <!post=New Version of TweakUI Available,275832>New Version of TweakUI Available<!/post>.
