    Deleting Objects from ISP Server

    Hi,
Im using FP2000 and have my web objects on my ISP's server. No problem in getting new or updated objects there, but how do I delete an out-of-date or unwanted object from the server? Probably something obvious I'm missing here, but I've checked the FP documentation and can't seem to find anything on the subject. Thanks for any help or info.

How are you getting your files up to the server?
If you are using the Publish command. FP will compare the files in the web being published with the files on the server. FP will ask you if you wish to delete files that are no longer in the web being published.

Re: Deleting Objects from ISP Server

    Hi Jimx,

If you are using Frontpage 2000, you would log on locally to the server. In other words, open Frontpage go to File > Open Web
    2. Where it says new folder type in "http://www.jimxcom.com" w/o the qoutes for example and press Open.
    3. You should get prompted for your user name and password at this point. Enter them accordingly
    4. Once the web opens -- you should notice at the top behind the Microsoft Frontpage - http://www.jimxcom.com. This means you are open directly on the server in your directory.[thumpup]
    5. You can edit pages, delete pages etc from this point and remove any unwanted information. You can also create subwebs etc. if necessary.
    6. A number of ISPs will add additional folders in there for the purposes of tracking useage information. Those will probably be protected and you can't remove them. But anything that you have created or added up there should be available for editing.
    7. I work off a DSL line, so I do all my editing online. If you are editing a file and you are worried about the world seeing what you are doing, this doesn't happen. If someone requests the page that you are working on while you are working on it, the server retrieves a cached version. They will not see any of your changes till you hit save and that will post the changes directly to the website.
    8. I then, after I am done editing what is necessary, publish all my changes back to my hard drive and my local machine, so I have a exact duplicate of what is on the server and what the world sees, just in case I loss my connections. So, in other words, the web is open at http://www.jimxcom.com and then I go to File > Publish Web and publish to a specific location C:My DocumentsMy WebsJimxcom.

Hope that helps. If you have further questions, please post them here. Be more then happy to help. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Deleting Objects from ISP Server

    WebGenii, thanks for the reply.
I'm using the Publish facility in FP. FP has never asked if I wished to delete files. Think there might be an option somewhere I'm missing? FP just sends the updated objects and immediately returns a message (paraphrasing): Do you want to view your changes? Finished?
I know I have a lot of stuff that could be deleted from the server...any ideas? Thanks again. Jim

Re: Deleting Objects from ISP Server

I have tried this technique but all I get is a message box saying that the server does not appear to have FP Extensions installed. Can you offer any help as to how I delete my old webs from the server, particularly all the theme-related folders and files ?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Deleting Objects from ISP Server

I don't think you can log on directly to your website as Alba descibes if your ISP doesn't have FP server extensions installed (at their end). You'll need to create your files locally and then use FTP to transfer and delete files off the web server. Most ISP's have a "favourite" FTP program that they recommend (there are also many free FTP programs you can download). Talk to your ISP about what they recommend. That kind of service is what you are paying your ISP for - don't be shy about asking for it!
