they need to have the language options installed, which i think is only a few dlls and the font, but i'm not sure if you need the international version of office or just the language support (like IE wants to install if you visit foreign sites).

This depends on what version of Windows you're using. Win2K has a multi-language input option that you can setup during the initial install (Otherwise you can add Japanese in the Keyboard Properties|Input Locales from the Control Panel). Other versions of Windows require a separate download of Microsoft's <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/features/ime.asp>Global IME</A>. The IME will show up in your task-bar and you can switch between Japanese and English input from there.
