New Installation of WinXP (WinXP Pro w/all updates)

Has anyone else had problem after problem with XP? I just installed it over WinME with apparently no problems, but I have had to uninstall and reinstall many of my programs, including ZoneAlarm and Norton SystemWorks and I have just spent most of today sorting it out.

Now I am left with just a couple that I cannot work out how to clear (that I know of!):
<UL><LI>In Windows Explorer, when I click 'Search', I get a blank pane with a cartoon dog at the bottom, who has a very thin speech bubble with nothing in it. How do I get the Search to come up? (where's the shortcut for WinEx gone, by the way? I've been using Windows-E on the keyboard because I can't find it anywhere else!)
<UL><LI>More seriously, in Internet Explorer, many links just ignore being clicked on. Login buttons in particular don't work and most of the others are, I think, Javascript, too. I've got Netscape and Opera installed and they work fine - it seems to be something to do with IE/Java VM. I've had other problems with the Java VM recently, since the Sun site changed it's download page (now http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp; sorry it's not clickable, I've just discovered the 1-click tag panel and smilies links are affected by IE's inability to click on them!) - is there anywhere else one can go to get a version of Java VM that might work?
Edited because I've just found a couple more!
<UL><LI>Clicking on 'Organise favourites' in Internet Explorer brings up the right screen, but the area where the favourites should be listed is blank and cut down so small some of the text areas around it are overlapping each other!
<UL><LI>On reloading Norton SystemWorks, the NAV won't install. I watched it trying and it went through fine - then immediately UNinstalled itself before going on to finish installing the other parts of NSW! Is there some quirk of WXP I need to know about to get the Anti-Virus to install?
Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated!

First of all, post the versions numbers of the different software that you are having problems with. Some may need to be up graded. Also, list ALL programs that you have reinstalled their versions and why you had to reinstall. ZA and Norton;s MUST be the version built for XP, the earlier version will NOT work and will give you nothing but trouble if you even try to install them. Did you remove Norton's and ZA before upgrading to XP?

What error messages are you getting?

Being that you "Up graded " Me to Xp, your user account amy be different that what you had in Me. You may need to find the old folder that your favorites were in and move them to you new user folder under, "Documents and Settings"

XP does NOT come with the Java machine, I use the VM from MS, which was pulled from their site do to the Sun law suite.

Bottom line, you may be in for a total Clean rebuild.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Beryl--

Try running system file checker and see if that helps. Throw in the CD-Rom and at the command prompt type in 1) "sfc /purge cache" and after that runs quickly 2) "sfc /scannow Leave a space between sfc and the forward splash. It might replace files that are corrupted. Also run CHKDSK /R as well on the hard drive and see if this helps.

Also see Can't Do File Search 11June 03 thread this section

There have been a number of links on fixing Internet Explorer and with the 6 pages retrievable, I put a lot of the back ones on one of the threads there. You can try them.

Instead of Wasting Too Much Time How To Get an XP Install That Works:

If you could back up or are backed up to your satisfaction, and can't fix this, I'd do this. Wipe your hard drive clean of ME. A very compelling argument could be made and has been by a number of people who have watched the Windows OS evolve, that ME is one very unstable operating system to upgrade from to any NT based kernel system XP, and any in the future. I know it's a valid upgrade in theory and may work well for a number of people. But here's what most people don't know, and Microsoft is not going to voluntarily tell you, but they won't deny that its not true. You don't need ME. That "upgrade" has all the code and files of the more expensive XP box that wasn't an upgrade--true if it's a Home Upgrade--true if it's a pro upgrade. When you load, it looks for the files and folders that have to be loaded. If you take ME off, it's going to load you the full XP.

And for anyone patent/trademark conscious, this complies fully with all licensing agreements and current code sections. You bought the box.

Re: New Installation of WinXP (WinXP Pro w/all updates)

If anyone reading this thread is interested, I found the fix for IE (which fixed the search facility in WinEx, too) with the help of a technical-type person at the office - by downloading and installing the Windows Script Engine from Microsoft.

I still don't know why NAV won't work, though - I gave up and downloaded AVG (free Edition) instead.

    Thanks for the comments anyway, DaveA and SMBP <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

Hope this solution helps someone else too!
