Increase list indent with Tab (XP)

Something caused my ability to increase the indent of a line in a outline numbered list with Tab (or decrease it with Sft+Tab) to disappear. Now when I press Tab, it moves the content of the line over one tab stop. It used to change, say, list level 1 to list level 2. I tried uninstalling and re-installing Word, but that didn't fix it. Any suggestions?

    Hi Billy:
I don't have Word 2002, but it'll be similar to 2000. Go to Tools/Options/Edit tab & check the box that says "Tabs & backspace set left indent". By the way, you don't really need that option checked. You can demote & promote outline level numbering by using Alt+Shift+right or left arrow to change the numbering level. That way you can still keep the tab ability.
    Cheers,

Re: Increase list indent with Tab (XP)

    Hi Phil,
Thanks for replying. That option is not available in Word 2002. This is a real puzzle. Tab no longer works on my laptop, but it does on my desktop, even though I have copied Normal.dot from my desktop to my laptop. Further, Alt+Shift+right works on my laptop, but not on my desktop. I upgraded from Office 2000 to Office XP on both computers, so this ability to use Tab may have something to do with a registry setting that Word 2002 inherited from Word 2000. What changed it on my laptop, I don't know.

In word 2002 you will find this option in Tools > Autocorrect > Autoformat as you type

Thanks Stuart. That did, indeed, take care of the problem.
