    Desktop.ini (XP)

I have a file that appeared on my desktop called desktop.ini that has in it the following line:

    [LocalizedFileNames]
    Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:WINDOWSinfunregmp2.exe,-4

Any idea what this, where it came from in, and can I erase it?

    thanks

    Re: Desktop.ini (XP)

Desktop.ini is a system file. The default setting is to hide it; if you uncheck "Hide system files" in the View tab of Tools | Folder Options... in Windows Explorer, it will be displayed.
As you can see, it contains information about the shortcut to Windows Media Player. If you delete it, it wlll probably come back aurtomatically.

Is there a way to hide hidden files on the desktop , but not in folders?
Thanks for the answers to both questions.

There may be a way without 3rd party, but I believe you need an additional program or one of the many XP Tweakers to do this. These may or may not have the selectivity you want. I think they do:

Free Advanced Hide Folders from Voodoo Files
    Linda's Lock & Hide (Trialware)
Free Hide Folders XP v. 1.3

    SMBP
