    CD Backups

I am trying CD backups for the first time...

My drive is a Sony R/W...

My software is unselected as yet...

I looked at a couple packages this weekend, and it seems that they all want you to use formatted disks. But if that's the case, you then cannot use CD/R's, right? Only CD R/W's?

If only certain packages will write to CD/R's, which ones?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Chuck,
What software have you looked at so far ? What kind of backups do you want to make? If you want to create images, check out DriveIMage, BootitNG & Ghost. You can find a miriad of opinions about each product. I'm sure there'll be several from the lounge that will chime in. I think all have a trial version. You might want to try each. You can also get into the pros and cons of the image backup method.

    Joe:

I just d/l BootIt... I'll take a look... I've been toying with upgrading my Norton Ghost anyway, so that too, is an option, perhaps.

    Chuck--

You can get some info on some back loung threads and see if any of the programs mentioned by Joe or in the threads have 30 day free trials. Many do.

    Joe:

I just got a great piece of news:

not only does my version of Ghost read NTFS, but it also found my CD-W, AND wrote to the CD-R's with no help... so at least if I'm out to trip myself up again, I'll have at least some backup available...

Funny the CD drive wasn't listed at Symantec.com... I happened across the recognition when getting ready to "Ghost" to another hard drive...

    Chuck

Me too... you don't know what a feeling (sort of like Christmas) to suddenly not be worried about the several hours you just spent on setups and configurations...
