Page Numbering (Word XP)

Hello Everyone:

I have a thirteen page document, I need to suppress pg 1, 10, 11, 12, and 13. I have chosen insert, page numbering and have requested top right. I then go to page 10 and double click on the page 10 and the header box appears, I double click on 10 and press delete, but all the page numbering also gets deleted.

Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi Dillon65. Perhaps you could help me out a bit. When you say you want to "suppress" pages 1 and 10 to 13, does this mean you do not want them, the physical pages, to print, or you do not want the page numbers to appear, i.e., you do not want these pages to have numbers. Do you want pages 2 to 9 to have the numbers 2 to 9 or do you want them numbered starting at page number 1.

I suspect you could do what you want using Sections within the document and adjusting the page numbers accordingly, e.g., have a first section with no page number, have a second section with page numbers 2 to 9 (or 1 to 8), and then have a third section with no page numbers again. HTH

You only have one header for the entire document. When you delete something from this header it affects all the pages.

If you have lots of other things in your header and you might need to make changes in future then replace the { PAGE } field in the header with something like
{ IF {PAGE} < 10 "{PAGE}" "" }
(use Control-F9 to insert the { } characters

If the header is fairly simple and you don't mind having to edit it in two places for future changes then insert a section break before page 10, and clear the "Same as previous" property for the header in the second section.

If you don''t understand a word of this reply then say so and I will try to post step by step instructions.

The layout of headers and footers is bound to sections of a document. Sections are separated by section breaks. Each section can have up to three different headers (and footers): one for the first page, one for odd pages (this is the "default" header) and one for even pages.

To suppress the page number (and everything else you have in the header) on the first page, click somewhere in the first page, select the Layout tab of File | Page Setup... and check "First page different...".

At the end of page 9, insert a section break ( Insert | Break...; if there is a clear distinction between the text on page 9 and on page 10, make it a Next Page section break, otherwise a Continuous section break). Click somewhere in page 11 through 13, and select View | Header and Footer. By default, the "Same as previous" button on the Header and Footer toolbar is "down". Click it once to unlink the header from that of the first section, then remove the page number.

Re: Page Numbering (Word XP)

Hello Ron. M; Stuart. R; and Hans:

Thank you so much for all your time and effort in helping me, I am typing this contract for a big wig Treasurer; I will play around with your suggestions and see what happens. I still have a WordPefect mentality; I am coming around though.

Out of the few forums that I belong to, I really enjoy this one, very straight to the point and not all consumed with adds.

Again, Thanks
