Virus or Something Else? (Excel 97)

    Hello:
I am wondering if anyone here can provide some ideas as to what is going on here.

I have a user, that, whenever he does a FILE - Save As, the filename reverts to one character (the first).
For example, if they type in filename "TEST.xls" - it automatically reverts to and save as "T.xls"

I suspect a virus, but can't find any reference to this behaviour.
In the meantime, I've done the following, but have come up empty:

Have checked for rogue .xls files locally - there is nothing.
Have checked xlstart directory - there is nothing
Have checked system registry for odditites- can't see anything out of the ordinary
    Have run Norton's Anti-Virus with up-to-date profiles - nothing.
Have searched local drive for existence of personal.xls file - there was no personal.xls (though I may have deleted this at an earlier date when debugging another issue - in any case, it doesn't exist now)
Have checked for rogue macros via VBA editor - there is nothing.

    Any ideas?

Also, where's the search function for this forum?
Is there one or am I just too dense to find it today??

    Yes, checked that too already.
    No add-ins are activated.

What happens if Excel is started in safe mode:

    Start, run,

    "crogram filesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /safe

Re: Virus or Something Else? (Excel 97)

Starting in safe mode leads to error on start up "afe.xls cannot be found".
Otherwise, Excel will start. However, the problem of single character file name also persists.

I also tried starting excel using "/automation" switch which should disable all add-ins and hidden workbooks, but the save issue persists.

When the user clicks FILE - SAVE it immediately reverts to a single character filename by default.
For example, if you open a new workbook ("Book 1"), when you click on File - Save, the default filename is "B" only.
You can change this to whatever, but it will revert to single character as soon as the OK button is clicked.

    Any other ideas?

Sorry for this salvo of questions, but I wan trying to figure out what the heck is going on, and then these questions came up?

OK when you say <<< Have checked for rogue .xls files locally - there is nothing. >>> what do you consider Rogue?

What Windows OS are you running Excel under?

Do other application have the same problem?

What happens when you save two books, say Book1.xls, and Book2.xls. does it say B.xls already exists?

What happens when you use VBA to save a file?

What happens when you use VBA to populate the SaveAs Dialog with your own parameters?

After you SaveAs a workbook with a x.xls, what happens when you re-SaveAs that same file? Does it get another x.xls. or xx.xls?

Let me dig some more and I'll get back to you. In the mean time, please try and get the answers to these questions.

Re: Virus or Something Else? (Excel 97)

    Hello Wassim:

    In response to your questions...

    >>> What do you consider Rogue?
By rogue I mean any .xls, .xlt, or .xla files on the local drive that are not part of the standard installation, or can't otherwise be explained.

    >>> What Windows OS are you running Excel under?
    Windows XP

    >>> Do other application have the same problem?
    No, it's only Excel.

    >>> What happens when you save two books, say Book1.xls, and Book2.xls. does it say B.xls already exists?
    Yes.

    >>> What happens when you use VBA to save a file?
Haven't tried this yet. Will give it a go later today or tomorrow.

    >>> What happens when you use VBA to populate the SaveAs Dialog with your own parameters?
Haven't tried this yet. Will give it a go later today or tomorrow.

    >>> After you SaveAs a workbook with a x.xls, what happens when you re-SaveAs that same file? Does it get another x.xls. or xx.xls?
    It saves as x.xls

    Regards
    Andrea
