ZoneAlarm 3.7.202

I still use the free version and twice (last night and again this morning) I've received an onscreen message that 3.7.202 is available. When I click yes, it takes me to their web site, where I click on the download link but it's wanting to send me 3.7.193 - happened twice 'cause I wasn't really watching what I was doing. (I already downloaded 3.7.193 a month ago) I had to go through the regular process of downloading to finally get the thing to give me the correct file. FYI.....

Just tried doing it manually. Same result. I still have 3.7.143. Have you noticed any improvement with 193 over the previous version. I know you're supposed to update; I just hate to fix something that's working.

I tried "check for update" earlier today and although it stated 202 as you said it attempted to download 193, but, just tried it again and it has downloaded 202 so that problem would appear to be corrected. I always load the most current version. Makes me feel that much safer.

Re: ZoneAlarm 3.7.202

Big Al,

I tried and received the same results twice. (said it was 202 but sent 193 )
I finally uninstalled the older version of Zone, downloaded ver 202 again and reinstalled it. This time it came as ver 202 for the program and true vector and the DRIVER ver as 193. So it looks like two different animals with similar version numbers. But, it does now look OK as is.
( I haven't noticed any particularly noticable differences, but it said there were more security changes in the new version ) who knows?

I must admit I haven't examined the innards ot ZA Phil, so I can't answer the question about features. Brief look thru the GUI screens and I didn't see anything. The only reason I went after it (the update) was that they said the magic word - "internet security" and since they only updated a month ago I figured it must be important. I was just too busy at the time to do any more reading.

Thanks, Al. I'll update. If it doesn't work out, I keep the older ones.

Thanks for those informative links (esp #2). Looks like ZA got unjustly "done over" due to poor handling of the situation by their own exec. I guess their PR guys will rule the roost a bit more firmly in the future.

Despite the comments about ZA toning down their push to upgrade to the paid version, I've noticed that the free version seems to get more difficult to find with each upgrade. In fact, if you're unaware of it's existence, you'll probably miss it at the site

Re: ZoneAlarm 3.7.202

I don't know Tim, ZA can automatically check for upgrades (see the Overview|Preferences Tab), or on the same tab you can check for update. This takes you directly to the download page for the updated software. Granted, there was a problem with that download, the original subject of this thread, but I truly believe it was a simple oversight. Frankly, I'd jump through an awful lot of hoops to use this software and AVG-Grisoft antivirus. Both free, non-intrusive extremely effective security insurance.

Agree with you 99% of the way, and I too will jump a hoop, or three, to use ZA.. My point, for what it was worth, was that for newbies, the free version is an almost hidden option.

I also like the concept of auto-updates, but prefer to d/l the install files so I've got them available directly, if needed again (this goes for all products, not just ZA).

That sure is the way to go. Saves a lot of re-downloading and searching around. I keep a separate HD just for that purpose.

Just in case, check out this site: www.oldversion.com. Someone mentioned it about 8 months ago and has just saved my butt with MusicMatch JB whose version 8 features an ugly update manager you must download first. I'll DL MMJB 7.5 which must be pretty similar.
And yes, at the bottom of the list there's a link for previous versions of ZA

Re: ZoneAlarm 3.7.202

Yup, that's why I did away with MMJB 8's clumsy install manager and looked for the most recent previous version. This install manager weighs only 600 K, but each time you want to install, it connects to musicmatch.com and downloads... 10M!!!
I'd rather download the 10M MMJB 7.5 weighs and keep it handy for future needs.
I always keep all useful executable files. Just in case, they are periodically backed up to my secondary drive as well, courtesy of Karen Kenworthy .
