XP's PPPoE (Win XP Pro SR-1)

I would like to know how to disable Windows XP's PPPoE. It appears to conflict with WinPoet (Earthlink) and killing WinPoet doesn't do the trick. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!!!

    Try:
MSKB 283070 - HOW TO: Create a PPPoE Connection in Windows XP

Otherwise, what indications are you getting which make you believe there is a conflict?

Have read several articles that suggest that Earthlink's software is not XP compatible. While surfing the activity light will go off and Earthlink's diagnostic page comes up. It always require that PPPoE be fixed. No matter how many times you try to "fix" it, eventually the activity light will come back on and it will fix itself. This happens every four or five website hits and when doing downloads over 3Mb. Hope this gives you a better idea.

    Robert--

Whatever the problems, there is an earthlink thread on most of the broadband newsgroups, and a read of the earthlink forum at "dsl reports" would indicate there are a number of XP users and gamers with cutting edge video cards and os's that are using earethlink fairly problem free. I doublt if whatever it is is blanket "earthlink."

Dump both WinPoet and the PPPoE function within XP and connect the modem to a D-Link DI-604 router ($30US after rebate and there is always a rebate) or router of your choosing. The router will take care of the authentication. I use Earthlink and never had to use WinPoet as they sent a BroadMax DSL modem which has the function built in and with the router there is never a logon once you run the set-up wizard you and all your computers are good to go. The router will also give you a bit more protection against any known bad guys wanting to control or rummage through you harddrive as it has some firewall functions built-in.
