System 32 folder opens at startup (Windows XP)

I just bought a new computer. Whenever it starts, a folder called System 32 opens. Is this necessary? What causes this. Can I prevent it from opening up at Startup?
    Thank your very much.

Open Windows Explorer and look in Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup and in Cocuments and Settings<your user name>Start MenuProgramsStartup. Everything in there will be started automatically when you start Windows.
If you see a shortcut to System32, remove it.

I thank you for responding so quickly. I tried but did not see any shortcuts to the System 32 folder. Thank you, though.

You can also look in the Windows Registry. Be very careful when editing the Registry.

    Select Start | Run...
    Type regedit, then press Enter.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun and to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun. Anything there? Don't go about removing everything that mentions System32 - items here might be essential to the functioning of Windows.

Just a bit further to Hans' post....check out article 170086 in the Knowledge Base to see if anything there applies. Usually this problem is caused by a damaged or incomplete registry entry.

Re: System 32 folder opens at startup (Windows XP)

Thanks to all who replied....I just spoke to the Dell technician....I had to go to msconfig and uncheck /L:ENG. This was somehow built into the script of the sound card. Unchecking does not affect the sound, it just prevents the System 32 folder from opening on Startup. The technician explained that this is a question that they get asked frequently!
    Thanks again.
