Audio Sounds Like It's Coming From Inside Tin Can

Setup Info: Dell Dimension 4300 w/256M Memory, Win2K Pro, Creative SB Live

Please forgive the double post. I sent this to the MS Win2K Pro Multimedia User Group yesterday morning, but when I checked back in there today, I realized that about a third of the posts to that group haven't received any responses, and my question seems to have fallen within that third. Besides, y'all seem to have more fun. ;-)

My hard drive died recently, and when the replacement HD was installed, the audio suddenly sounded as if it was coming from deep inside a tin can. I remember fixing this problem when the computer was new, but I haven't been able to find the cheat sheet on how to do it after a fairly extensive search of the Help and MS Knowledge Base files. This isn't a big problem, but I'd appreciate any advice you have to offer. Thanks!

Sound Blaster Live, you say? Open the Creative Surround Mixer and make sure the speaker settings are correct for your configuration (2.1, 4.1, 5.1 etc). Also double check you connections on the sound card itself. Lastly, make sure you have the most recent driver set for the card; it can make a big difference.

BTW, a double post between two different forums isn't a problem whatsoever! We do discourage duplicate posts within the Lounge whenever possible, but if you want to post your questions on more than one board....more power to you. At least you know where the fun is. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Thank you, Mark! I wasn't able to locate anything called "Creative Sound Mixer," but I puttered around with the various Sound Blaster settings until I found one that said "Restore Defaults," and clicking it solved the problem. I still don't know specifically what the problem was, but it's gone now, and I sure do appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

At a guess it was expecting a configuration with a separate bass output and just supplying you with the high end signals for tweeters (like those 1" diameter speakers you sometimes see on cars . . .)
