    Backups (WinXP)

I have two CR-R drives - D & E. Is there some way that I can back up parts of my C drive automatically at a predetermined time to a CD?

You can do this with Drive Image 7.0.

I don't think so, Joe. Right now, I'm using Backup Now to do nitely selected file backups and it says it works with CDs but I don't do that so I can't "testify." On the other hand, there are many places on the web that one can find backup solutions, some even free. One such place is List Of Lists.

You can write a bat file or VBScript to copy part of your C: drive, then create a Scheduled Task to run it at desirable time. To learn more about VBS and Task Scheduler, see Windows Help.

    Example of BAT file:

xcopy "Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersDocuments*.*" "D:Backup Documents" /S /Y

(In this case you must have rewritable CD already formatted and ready in D: drive).

And Boss Woody's latest recommendation in WOW 4.11 is for this program, which I just downloaded but have not tried yet. Most "folks" aren't into "programming" on their own, so the ready-mades are more desirable.

    Thank you.
Would you let me know how things work out with the program?

    BigAl,
Thanks. I had a brain freeze <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> when I read 'PARTS of my C drive'. You are correct DI will only backup a complete drive.

    Re: Backups (WinXP)

I gave Woody's recommended program a short spin and stopped after just a few minutes. It seems to be another one of the ton of programs that want to let you select FOLDERS for backup, not individual FILES within a folder. I saw that the program "says" you can create file filters for inclusion or exclusion but I don't think that will get the job done, at least for me. For example, there are a handful of individual files in the root directory of the C: drive that I like to make backup copies of, such as BOOT.INI and others. The program won't let me look at the files in an individual directory. Oh well, the price looked better than BackupNow but.....

Using inclusion and exclusion filters is the standard method I use with our backup software. For example, I would add
    *.wbk
to the exclusion list so that backups of Word documents were ignored.

Could you not add something like
    C:*.ini
    to an inclusion list?

    Re: Backups (WinXP)

Oh yeah, it'll sometimes work. Like, your example is OK if you want ALL the .ini files on the drive or in a directory. This one is much like our fave, Karen's Replicator. I was able to get where I wanted, but the include/exclude filters list just about became a huge list of individual file names or extensions. Doing that type thing is almost more work than it would be to just use plain ol' batch file commands as was suggested by Jefferson in another thread. I guess I've just gotten too lazy for my own good, in these days of click-to-select GUIs (see attachment - from BackUp Now).
