    You can use the HasData property to test if the report displays any records.

    =IIf([Report].[HasData];Sum([Jan]);Null)

    I'm sorry, I didn't pay attention to details. Use commas instead of semi-colons (on my Dutch-language system the comma is the decimal symbol, and semi-colon is the list separator)
