    Word 97: Large Font Problem

When opening a Word 97 document on a WIN 98 computer one of my users has the font size drive up to approximately 250 pt. The five page document then starts building to over 300 pages because of the font size. Other users including myself (WIN 2K) can open the file just fine. Also, if you try and Save As the only file type you can select is a template file (.dot).

    Thanks in advance.

Rename (or delete) that user's Normal.dot file (make sure there's only one Normal.dot on the HD)

If that doesn't fiss it, write back and I'll give you a reg hack that might help.

Re: Word 97: Large Font Problem

    A quick perusal of the KB yielded <A target="_blank" HREF=http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/psssearch.asp?SPR=wrd97&T=B&KT=ALL&T1=7d&LQ=invali d+page+fault&PQ=PastQuery&S=F&A=F&DU=C&FR=0&D=Word VBA97kb+or+wordkb+or+word97+or+vbapps+or+of97&LPR= "Word+97"&LNG=ENG&VR=http://support.microsoft.com/support;http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/webcasts;http://support.microsoft.com/highlights&CAT=Support&VRL=ENG&SA=GN&Go.x=22&Go.y= 19>144 results here.</A>.

But before looking at those potential causes, you can
    1) Do a search for all "*.tmp,~*.*" & delete them (with Word closed & after a reboot).
    2) To see at a glance if it is a Word add-in or corrupt normal.dot, as Kevin suggested, you can start Word from the command line (Start/Run) & type winword.exe /a

If that doesn't cure the problem, then you can dissect the problem using Kevin's suggestions...or worse, if that doesn't work, start on the KB articles.

This is typical of virus-infected files. Possibly it was "cleaned" and the formatting got corrupted slightly? Try inserting the "document" into a fresh document and see if that fixes it.

Re: Word 97: Large Font Problem

Some success with your help. User received the problem file via e-mail and has recent virus definitions on his system. There was a "normal.fmt" file in the Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office folder. His normal.dot file was in the Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/Templates folder. Don't know what that FMT file is. Tried to delete the normal.dot and then open the problem file in Word but got the same results. User was able to insert the problem file into a blank word document without getting the font problem but...now the file acts as if there's a page break after every line.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Although TechNet can be very helpful at times I've found it lacking for this problem. Thanks very much for the great inputs so far.
