    Excess programs running (XP home)

There seem to be many programs that launch when I start the PC (using XP for Home).
Can anyone direct me to site that indicates what is really required? Maybe even what the strangely named programs do?
Some are easy to guess, some are cryptic.

    Thanks,
    Chuck

This is a great place for what you want. Pacs Portal When you get to the page, scroll down untill you see the heading " THE PROGRAMS" then choose " ALL ITEMS" on that page scroll down untill you see "ALPHANUMERIC INDEX" and there you. Look up the name of the startup Item by using the Alphabet.

And you probably already know that you should do Start, Run Msconfig and look under Startup to see the list of what's run at boot time. Sometimes by looking at the directory names or registry key info in that list you'll get more "clues" as to what the item is at least associated with. By the way, the place Cowboy told you about is great for finding out if you've got any spyware or virus stinkers in the woodpile. Another is Answers That Work.

    Chuck--

In addition to Pacs Portal try XP Service Configurations on Black Viper's site. You can also google for start up managers--there are a number of free ones available that have been linked in past lounge threads.

    SMBP,

Thanks. I downloaded Mike Lins program adn ran it. Makes it easier to find what is running.

Re: Excess programs running (XP home)

I have an msconfig question. Perhaps you can help me: Some of the programs that load at startup are on the list twice ... and that creates problems for at least one of them. But I don't know how to delete a program from that list under the startup tab. AND, when I deselect an entry, it doesn't stay deselected (yes, I click on Apply before closing.

    Thanks!

You've got what looks like two questions in there. First, if you're un-checking something and it comes back, you're going to have to find and either disable or uninstall the offending program that's continues to put the entry back. Is it a secret what the program is? Secondly, you should note that the MSCONFIG Startup window is showing you several different places for the "location" of the startup entry. Registry entries show under local machine (HKLM) or current user (HKCU) and then there's Common Startup which is the entries in your Start Menu's Startup subset. I don't remember what the one that's called plain old Startup is for.

As suggested above, I think you'd be well served to get yourself a utility for tweaking the startup process and I happen to like X-Teq XSetup, 'cause it's <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>. Even then, you need to be very careful with programs like that, moving slowly maybe one thing at a time. Xsetup let's you change LOTS of stuff from its GUI that could cause a "big bang" of your system if you change the "wrong thing!"

Programs appear twice because you probably installed them more than once. Everytime you reinstall one it's listed again in MSCONFIG.

As for it's reappearing, you will have to find the option within the program and uncheck Load when Windows Starts (or something to that effect). Program options take precedence over what's checked or unchecked in MSCONFIG.
