    scan disk hangs on startup

With WinME installed, computer hangs at startup, won't complete, can't cancel. Have gotten it to finish scandisk in safe mode when this problem happens, and then am able to reboot normally.

Today unable to boot at all in safe mode or with support from cd rom, have decided to reinstall WinME. I noticed that no surface scan was run during the install even though it is listed as a preliminary step.

Is something wrong with scan disk, the hard drive, or any other suggestions?

    Thanks for your help

Re: scan disk hangs on startup

When you can get booted back to the Desktop you might want to go into MSCONFIG and see what programs is being started on Startup. One of those programs may be causeing it to hang on startup trying to start.
Also could be the Video Driver. Have you tried to update it to the most recent Drivers?
Read the article below. It talks about possibly a problem with your Antivirus Program Starting at startup, among other things.
Here is a good article from Microsoft that might help. Microsoft
If I were you I would update to Win2000 as soon as possible.

Re: scan disk hangs on startup

I did get the desktop back once or twice but the system was so unstable (lots of "System is busy." messages) that it seemed less time consuming to do a clean install of all software (actually I wasted time on a reinstall which went OK but did nothing to resolve the problem), which has never been done in nearly three years since we have had the system.

The articles were interesting. I still need to check the video drivers, but the system seemed to hang later in the cycle than the possible antivirus problem, i.e., after the Win ME logo screen has already gone by. I don't have much that loads at startup, but anyway Safe Mode didn't work either, nor did step by step confirmation.

System hanging on startup seems unforgivable. Not a bad idea about Win2k, would that require different versions of software though? I've never worked with that OS.

Re: scan disk hangs on startup

Here's something else you can try in ME.....

This is tricky and you may have to try a few times to time it right...........The moment your boot process transfers to the Windows startup, Press F8. This is usually about 1 second after the last screen from the BIOS startup. At the correct time to Press F8, Windows should be displaying a message such as "Starting Windows ME...." but it is usually too fast to see, let alone react to. You could also try holding down the F8 key during the startup until the keyboard beeps.

Once you succeed, you'll get a menu such as:
    .................................................. ............................
    Microsoft Windows Millenium Startup Menu

    1. Normal
    2. Logged (BOOTLOG.TXT)
    3. Safe Mode
    4. Step-by-step confirmation

    Enter a choice: 1
    .................................................. ............................
Start in "4. Step-by-step" mode. Press "Y" when prompted until the process fails. Keep track of each step as the last one you accepted will be the problem.
Now Restart the same way, "F8"> "4. Step-by-step", only this time press "N" for the step that failed. Hopefully Windows will load and run and you can then remove or reinstall whatever is causing the problem.

    Have a Great day!!!
