    Track Changes Formatting (Word 2002/SP2)

The choices for formatting inserted text are: color only, italic, bold, underline, double underline. Is there any way to apply formatting other than this list? I have a user that wants to appliy bold AND double underline.

I don't think so. In the VBA object model, there are lists of values for wdInsertedTextMark, wdDeletedTextMark and wdRevisedPropertiesMark. Each of these have mutually exclusive values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc., not values that can be added together (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, ...)

    Hi Darryl:
Don't know how to do it directly. Best I can come up with is to use Find/Replace. Assume additions are marked with bold.

    Without wildcards
Find: leave blank but press Ctrl+N (format will change to New)
Replace: leave blank but press Ctrl+Shift+D (will change to double underline)

Then do a Replace all, leaving tracked changes on.
    Cheers,

I thought about using Find/Replace for some of this, but it somewhat defeats the Track Changes features. When I accept changes, I need the formatting to go away too. If I have applied any formatting, I have to get rid of it too. Plus, if I have other text that is already bold, it would get the additional formatting as well.

I looked at the code and could not see a way to do it - I was just hoping I overlooked something.

I don't have an answer, but it's a good thought. Almost everything else in Word is based on styles, why doesn't MS introduce InsertedText and DeletedText character styles that we could define ourselves? Hmmm...

    Hi Darryl:
You're correct that Find/Replace is not a substitute for being able to pick the complete format for Tracked changes.

However, I don't think you'd have too much trouble removing the extra formatting and other text which is bold would NOT be double underlined. The method I described would ONLY format NEW text as double underlined, not everything that was bold. If you had no other text that you deliberately formatted as double underlined, it wouldn't be much of a problem. If you accepted the changes, the new text only would remain with double underline & you could use Find/Replace to remove it. You could search for "not new" (by pressing Ctrl+N twice in the Find box) & replace without double underlines. In fact, you could record a macro that would remove it with one click.

    Sorry I misunderstood your post.

I tried to follow what you wrote, and Ctrl+N doesn't do anything when I am in the Find box. Am I overlooking something?

Re: Track Changes Formatting (Word 2002/SP2)

Hmmm. I should have mentioned that I don't have Word 2002. This works in Word 2000 & I assumed that it would still work in Word 2002. (When will I learn. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>) Pressing Ctrl+N in the Find box toggles through "New", "Not new", & nothing. It's sad that they took that out of Word 2002 (apparently). In Word 2002, is there anything under the Format button that allows you to search for tracked changes?

No, can't find anything related to Track Changes in the Find dialog.
