Adding text box/labels to a chart (Excel 2000)

Does anyone know how I could add a text box or labels with free text to an existing chart? When I select the option to add labels of course I get the value, however what I'd really like is to be able to change that to percentage. When selecting Chart Options > Data labels, the selection for percentages is grayed out. Any Ideas???

There also is an alternative chart data labeler. It is the Excel add-in I wrote (Chart Data Labels).
It has a few more options and its prettier<g>.
You can format the cell range with the label titles and the formatting carries over to the data label.
You can also reset the labels back to their default position if you don't like where you put them,
I've attached the Word.doc instructions and will provide the program (76 kb zipped) if anyone is interested.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks, the description in your document looks good. Would you be willing to attach the zip file with the add-in to a post, or do you prefer people to e-mail you for a copy?

Lets put it right here, see the attached file: zipped Excel Add-in (97 or later) - "Chart Data Labels" - Release 2.4.
The program is free. But if anyone wants to pay for it - tell me what you like or don't like about it.

In answer to the original question,
<hr>Does anyone know how I could add a text box or labels with free text to an existing chart<hr>
one quick way is to click in the formula bar (with the chart selected), type your text and press ENTER.

This creates a floating text box on the chart.

    Jim,

Your add-in works fine. If you will allow me to make one suggestion: in the ReadMe file, there is no mention of the other menu options "Auto Scaling On/Off" and "Reset Font Sizes". Although it's pretty obvious what they do, it would be nice if the documentation is complete.

Again, thanks for posting your add-in!

Re: Adding text box/labels to a chart (Excel 2000)

    Hans,

Thanks for the response, all suggestions / comments about the program are welcome.
Doing the documentation is harder than doing the program and
its even harder to keep instructions to one page ( increases the chances of them being read ).
    I will incorporate your suggestion.

I am just completing some improvements to the program and hope to post the file in a few days.
It corrects a couple of embarrassments and adds area charts to the program.
In case anybody wants to know - there are 73 different chart types in Excel.

    Thanks again,

(Edited by HansV to update link to Excel MVP site)

Rob Bovey's <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> XYChartLabeler seems just the ticket. Despite the name, it works with most chart types. You can download it from the Excel MVP Page - scroll down a bit until you see the section by Rob Bovey.
