    Can't insert object into table (2000 SR1)

I volunteer for our local hospital and they sent me a Word document for a few minor changes. (At least, I THOUGHT they were minor.) It contains a table with some checkboxes. The changes they want are:

    1. Align the unruly checkboxes
    2. Get rid of the gray outside the shaded checkboxes

Dumb question: this form is for online use? You can easily make a pretty form for printout (e.g., using Wingdings symbols), but Word's built-in checkboxes are anything but. As far as I know, the gray shading cannot be removed from Forms toolbar checkboxes. Other types of controls might be quite programmable.

Interestingly, those checkboxes are considerably slimmer than the square ones I get from the Forms toolbar, and they don't look at all like the 3D ones from the Control Toolbox. Any chance they have some proprietary package they're using to put these things together?

    P.S. I hope you washed your hands after handling that file. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

It's not a dumb question at all. No, the form is to be printed. The local print shop doesn't know how to fix this either, but they don't have much to do with Word. More PageMaker and the like.
It's probably something so basic I'm overlooking it. Should I just attach the form and you can see for yourself?

When I selected the little box and tried to replace it with something else, this is what showed up in the Find box.

If you can attach the form, I think any number of people would be able to offer suggestions. After for that character, if you select it and open Insert>Symbol, you might get a read-out of its Unicode value on the status bar. Otherwise, it's, um, (a very unfamiliar alphabet) to me.

Here's a page of the form. I solved it but in a weird way.

Re: Can't insert object into table (2000 SR1)

Here's my weird fix. I just made a graphic with the little boxes covered by a group of white rectangular autoshaped overlaid with outlined and gray-filled rectangles. The other thing I did (that actually allowed me to add the graphic that fixed it) is go into Tools > Options > Save and checked the 'Disable features not supported by Word 97'.
    ????

Anyway, it worked. I haven't proofread it yet but I notice several spelling errors ("potocol" and the like) but at least I got the main problem fixed.

I'll be interested to see what I COULD have done.

    Thanks a bunch.

Good heavens, I think you went about it the hard way. But if they want gray inside their boxes, it might be the only way.

Being a lazy person, I guess, the first thing I would do is clear all the gray boxes by getting rid of all shading where it isn't wanted (the gray comes from a 25% shading, check out the Shading tab under Format>Borders). Actually, it's faster to copy a clear box and paste it over a gray one.

Second, I would set all the paragraphs back to default indentation (little bits of indent here and there are the cause of the lines not lining up

You have two different issues. As far as the checkboxes not lining up, if you turn on the show/hide button, you'll see that someone tried to "line up" everything by pressing the spacebar. This is a big mistake. Taking out the spaces & using tabs, if necessary, would line up the checkboxes.

The checkbox itself is an arabic character with an ANCII code of 63 in size 12. Someone then selected it & went to Format/Borders & Shading & applied a 25% pattern to the text. When that is done, the selection is always bigger than the "character" & so the shading is larger than the character. I think your method of getting rid of the excess shading is as good as any, especially because you were told that there must be shading inside the box. You could have used checkbox from the Forms toolbar, but the shading would not show up in print. You could apply shading through Format/Borders & shading, but the shading would go outside the box. Using a fill on a textbox or autoshape was as good as any.

Thanks guys. I'm so glad it wasn't something ridiculously basic that I just wasn't seeing. My forehead doesn't need any more dents in it.
Oh and yes...I did wash my hands. ;-)
