Windows Freezes When Deleting Many Files

    Hi there,

I'm running WIndows 98 SE and I have a problem where Windows Explorer locks up whenever I delete a large number of files. After 30-40 seconds it will unlock, but after that it locks again any time I do any kind of file manipulation (deleting a file, moving a file, copying a file, renaming a file).

I've discovered from searching the newsgroups that a lot of people have this problem, but I haven't found a solution yet.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance.

    James

Most likely you are overloading your cache capabilities and the system "locks up", so to speak, while it processes the data that's cached. Then it goes out and grabs more data and "locks up" again when the cache is full. I'm guessing that your hardware is somewhat older. If this is the case, then you would benifit from a good system cleanup if you don't do regular system maintenance. Often just emptying the Temporary Internet folder will do wonders for a sluggish system.

Post back with a little more information about your computer maintenance habits and your hardware specifics and we'll be better able to help you with this issue.

    Thanks for your post.

My hardware isn't that old. It's a 850 MHz P3. There's 30 GB free on my hard drive. And I do maintenance and clean-up all the time.

The only thing I found on the newsgroups that MIGHT be (somehow) related is that I have two hard drives. It seems that other people who have this problem also had extra IDE devices. Not that this problem occurs when I'm using both drives. It simply occurs whenever I delete a large number of files (>100).

    Hi James,

You say you have 2 hard drives. Are they both 7200's or is one a 5400 ?? The system will automatically default to the slower speed for both drives if one is set up as a slave to the other. Another possibility is if the files you are deleting are on the secondary drive, the process can be slower and run in fits and starts as you are discribing.

It could also be a caching issue. Try emptying the recycle bin and restarting your system after you delete such a large number of files , or for that matter, anytime your system starts behaving that way and see if that helps.
