    PAGEFILE.SYS (WIN XP PRO)

I am helping a friend who is getting a "low virtual memory" error message when she starts up her computer. In researching the issue, I found the following:

"The page file has become corrupt, possibly at a bad shut-down. In the Virtual memory settings, set to have no page file, exit, shut down the machine and reboot. Delete PAGEFILE.SYS (on each drive if more than just C, set the page file up again and reboot to bring it into use."

My question is once the PAGEFILE.SYS has been deleted, how do you set the page file up again? Thanks for your help.

    Trebor,

Right click My Computer, click properties | advanced | performance-settings | advanced tab | virtual memory-change.

Select the drive that you want the pagefile to be in. fill in bullet for either custom size ( and fill in the amount ) or system managed size. Click SET

The size for custom is usually a matter of how much RAM you have in your system. With a good amount ( say 512 or more ) you will probably not access the pagefile much, so you could set it for the same amount , minimum & maximum the same. If you don't feel like experimenting with size, let the system manage it for you.

    That should do it for you. <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>

    Re: PAGEFILE.SYS (WIN XP PRO)

I run 768MB of memory and do not have Page file turned on. Have never had any problems with that configuration, even playing 3D games. I have been told that some 3D Games require Virtual Memory no matter how much Ram you have, but I have yet to run into that problem. If you could tell us what kind of setup you have we could give you a better idea of which way would be the best way to set it up. Like how many Hard Drives do you have? Are they the same speed? How much available space do you have, and how much Memory are you running? Believe it or not it makes a difference.
