BSOD on cold boot (XP-SP1 Home)

Sony, PCG-FX220 laptop
Shipped with ME installed XP Home, which came from Sony, shortly after release of XP, 12/20/2001. This machine has been working great till a couple of weeks ago. On cold boot we get a BSOD, each time there is a different error, latest was "page fault in a nonpaged area". We have had a error that a device driver not working, disk utility or AV caused the problem, and even that there was BIOS error. All devices are working fine listed in the Hardware manager.

Ran, Disk Fitness test, found couple errors ran the fix, and that is when we got the page fault. Removed Norton's System 2002 suite and AV 2003, still getting a error of some type each time. In the middle of this installed 2 sticks (256 each) of ram.

We can always get it to run, just have to force power off, then run checkdisk on second start up and every thing is just fine until a shut down. We have NOT had any problems with a "Reboot" with out the shutting off the system

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

DaveA,

I think that that page fault in non paged area usually means a RAM problem. I would try a GOOD RAM tester to give your memory a workout.
A really good comprehensive tester is HERE. It makes a bootable floppy to boot to and excersizes the H*** out of your system RAM. If there is a problem there it should find it.

Swapped back to the original RAM and everything is running just fine. I even found a stick of ram from a different laptop and it is is even working just fine. Returned the new ram and got the back, CompUSA and no question asked after stating we were getting the BSOD.
