    Can't download w/ d/l manager

I am trying to download CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 11 Trial (Windows). I am using dial-up, so the 216MB d/l inevitably gets lost when I lose the connection to a time-out (connection keepers are out of the question w/ my ISP).

I tried to use some download managers, but when I do, they always 'finish' at exactly 288 bytes and confirm as complete - this is nuts <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15>

For those curious, here is the d/l link. It will d/l in IE fine, but I can't get it to download via a d/l manager. Any ideas why this might be happening? Any workarounds??

Give it a shot with this:

    StarDownloader

    *Increases speed up to 400%
*Splits your downloads into small parts but downloads them all at once.
    *Resumes downloads if links broken.
*Can schedule for certain times a day.
*Will find your ISP and hangup automatically.
*Most of the other DLAs like Download Accelerator Plus are full of spyware--some of it disruptive.
*Will let you integrate your anti-virus software into it to scan the downloads.
    *Is very reliable.
*Can mix Bloody Marys and dry Martinis while naming all registry keys and values.

Aha! The old "HTML masquerading as an executable trick" <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> You'll have to play along for a bit before you get to the real file. It wants your details along the way, so I didn't pursue it. See result using Fresh Download in s/s.

    Re: Can't download w/ d/l manager

I just tried the Corel link with the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> MetaProducts Download Express which is smaller, leaner and more spartan than Star Downloader. I prefer it because of those facts. And it performed perfectly. I use v1.3 which is more basic than v1.4 as you are on dial-up v1.4 may be better as it has a few more features <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

My workaround would be to get broadband! Or get some adjacent person with broadband to burn it to a CD for you.

Surely a 216 MB download down a 56 Kbps line would take several hundred years (I was never any good at maths...!)

    Re: Can't download w/ d/l manager

Actually, it isn't masquerading. I apologize, but the link I provided above won't work here as each link is unique in that an ID number is generated for that particular d/l after completing the registration process.

Perhaps the site may likely not accept 'Range Requests' as d/l managers make multiple connections to a file and create a heavy burden on servers. A browser will only create 1 connection for a file d/l. If range requests are disabled then maybe the d/l manager is rendered useless on that site but a browser will work fine.

The 288 bytes might be the header information that was my d/l manager performing a range request and their site saying "I don't think so!"

'<small>http://www.corel.com/6763/downloads/CorelD...rialVersion.exe</small> will not d/l with FreshDownload, StarDownloader, or MetaProducts Download Express.

I tried reducing the connections to just 1 on the d/l managers, but same results thus far. I can get an unattended 200MB+ d/l done overnight, but wish to pick up where left off after broken connection. Any other possible workarounds??

I appreciate the additional download app, sinjin, but Star Downloader is free.

Why don't you do it with Stardownloader, get Corel, and then if you want to spend time making your downloader work to get it do it after?

    Re: Can't download w/ d/l manager

I've run into similar problems too. Sometimes dropping down to a single connection works, but some sites seem to dislike download managers regardless. May be they turf them out when they try to negotiate the "resume protocol" (or whatever allows partial downloads to restat midstream)?

    Re: Can't download w/ d/l manager

I've also run into similar problems, but they have been somehow associated with the archive itself. With one particular downloader, I wrote to the author, mentioning that the AV update files from a particular site were consistently corrupted when downloaded by his software. He wrote back, saying that he had identified the problem with these particular .zip files, and had adapted his software accordingly. He never told me what that problem was, but he did rectify it... somehow ???

Maybe this is "one of those" archives.

    Hi, SMBP ~

Star reacts the same and won't download past the 288 byte header information. And puts too much vermouth in the martinis. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Hi, Alan ~

This particular file is a bare '.exe'. It downloads fine in IE (my best was up to 96MB before I lost connection). It think I will call Corel Cust. Serv. and see what they say.

Get them to send you a CD. Or make their software 10 times smaller. Surely they can't expect every single potential user to spend megayonks downloading 0.22 GB? Who do they think they are, Microsoft?? <img src=/S/hushmouth.gif border=0 alt=hushmouth width=16 height=16>

    Hi, John ~

Funny enough you should say that. I called them and they indeed are blocking range requests so d/l managers cannot be used. They are sending me the CD FOC. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Maybe John is right and they are an MS wannabe? The logic fits - put up a mammoth file to download and then pervent access by download managers! <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>
