    Disappearing text (2000)

We use a transcrition "Soft-Med" application that uses Word. Occasionally while transcribing the user is interupted, kicked out of the system. When the user returns the document is saved as a blank document. Has anyone ever experienced this happening that a document appears as blank with no text.?

Word usually saves when you tell it to, so I have to wonder... how often does the Soft-Med application save the document? Does the user have to do something to make it save? Maybe there is a configuration problem?

As a backstop, you could turn on the AutoRecovery feature (Tools>Options>Save) which will, at the designated interval, stash a temporary copy with, I believe, a .asd extension, in the location specified under Tools>Options>File locations. An AutoRecovery file should survive a crash, and is cleared after every save, so you don't have to worry about a lot of them piling up. When you need open Word, it should open the AutoRecovery files for you so you can resume work, but you'll want to save them under a new name in case, preserving the original, just in case the feature has not worked 100% effectively.

Soft-Med should be able to answer your question. In the meantime, definitely just do a manual save on occasion. It also depends on whether you are working from a server or locally. If you are working from a server, you must use the manual save. If you are working locally, then then the autosave will work. This is on Tools->Options->Save. I actually have my set to save every 1 minute.

I have used several transcription systems including SoftMed and this is a common problem, although does not usually happen often.

    Hi Jeanie:
For what it's worth, it would be a good idea to manually save frequently, even if you have autosave turned on. Autosave is not 100% reliable & only works when Word crashes. It's possible to lose your *.asd file & safer to manually save whenever you've done more editing than you'd care to repeat. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
